Volunteer Activities• Campground Host Photo Courtesy of FS DescriptionThere are 73 family sites within the campground for tents, trailers and RVs in two loops. Beartree is located near beautiful trout streams and there are several hiking trails near the campground—including the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area has over 400 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as numerous fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing areas throughout the recreation area. The campground is about 9 miles from Damascus, Virginia and 23 miles from the larger town of Abingdon, Virginia. Full hookups are available for host sites. Normally, this campground has several sets of hosts who share the duties. The primary responsibilities of the Forest Service Volunteer Hosts are: Greeting visitors and helping them get oriented to the area Inform visitors of campground rules and regulations Light maintenance of campground Ash removal from fire pits/grills Cleaning picnic tables Clean/Maintain bathhouses Opening and closing of gate each day Hosts are expected to be on site 4 to 5 days per week, including weekends and holidays.
