Volunteer Activities• Campground Host Photo Courtesy of FS DescriptionThe Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is looking for volunteers who enjoy the outdoors to fill several campground host opportunities. The Host will need to provide their own living quarters; e.g., trailer or RV. The campground is open from April 1st to November 30th. Hosts should be in the campground and available to the public 4 to 5 days per week, including weekends and holidays. Since our peak visitor days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, days off will be scheduled for weekdays, usually Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday. Service hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm, but Hosts may be called upon 24 hours/day if needed. Campground Host Duties: Host must have good people skills, be responsible and neat in appearance. Greeting visitors and helping them get oriented to the area, informing visitors of rules and regulations, and manage reservations. The Host(s) must be physically able to perform such tasks as raking, shoveling, mopping and sweeping, performing minor maintenance, inspecting the campground, keeping simple maintenance records, monitoring area use, and occasionally filling out forms. Perform cleaning of the restrooms/bathhouses on a daily basis. Host(s) will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions, and reporting vandalism and other problems to Forest Service personnel. All necessary tools, supplies, and safety equipment will be provided by the Forest Service, along with appropriate training. Raccoon Branch Campground is located in a beautiful area of southwestern Virginia with great views of the mountains—especially in the fall! The Dickey Knob Trial is located near the campground for hiking and biking to the summit of Dickey Knob. There is also access to over 400 miles of trails, including the Appalachian Trail and Virginia Creeper Trail. Raccoon Branch Campground is a perfect choice for a volunteer who wants a beautiful mountain setting while also enjoying the convenience of being adjacent to a paved state highway and having internet service. Hosts will be provided a campsite free of charge. The campground host sites offer water, electric, and sewer hookup. Hosts are provided with a land line phone for communication and a fax machine for updating reservations. Satellite TV is available if you have your own service. Cell phone coverage is not available in the campground and the nearest service is at our headquarters (10 minutes). Please call for more information on this great opportunity!
