Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Construction/Maintenance • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of FS DescriptionLooking to spend some time in the mountains during the hot summer months? Come volunteer at Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area, nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains in Central Virginia. Daytime visitors and campers enjoy swimming, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and camping. Located just a short drive away is the Blue Ridge Parkway, and other historical and scenic places to visit. The Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts are looking for campground hosts for Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area beginning April 1st. There are 4 campground host campsites available. Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area welcomes generations of visitors who come to enjoy the 40 shady campsites, the cool waters of the 7 acre lake, and quiet picnic sites under the trees. Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the dam forming the lake and the log picnic shelter used rocks and trees from the area. The massive stone fireplace and rough-hewn beams evoke an atmosphere of days long past. The area also includes a sand beach for swimming in the lake, a group campsite, and hiking trails. Campground host duties include: providing information and answering visitor questions, preparing campsites for visitors (pick up trash, clean fire rings, rake site) posting reservation sites, cleaning restrooms and bathhouse (sweep and mop, restock toilet paper, clean facilities, empty trash), locking and unlocking main gate, mowing and trimming grass, and maintaining Hopper Creek Group Camp nearby. Volunteers are an important asset who help make Cave Mountain Lake special to many of our visitors. We ask for at least a one month commitment (coming at the first of the month and leaving at the end of the month). Volunteers are asked to help at least 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, per person. Weekends and holidays are the busiest times, so volunteer “days off” are scheduled for the less busy weekdays. Volunteer campsites are designed to accommodate large campers and motor homes with up to 50-amp service. Nearby attractions to visit while you are here include the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Natural Bridge State Park, Shenandoah National Park and historic Lexington. Washington DC is within a 1/2 day drive. Easy access to Interstates 81 and 64 for travelling.
