Duties: The volunteer may perform any of the following tasks: Work with refuge staff and volunteers to conserve our refuge resources Maintain and improve trails – includes surveying trails weekly to trim branches, rake leaves and brush, weed whip vegetation and clip back shrubs when needed Mowing refuge areas as needed including Bandon Marsh HQ and Coquille Point Trash pickup from all refuge units, dump runs when needed General organization, filing, and cleaning Inventory of shop tools and supplies Invasive plant removal – mechanical/hand tools only Heavy lifting activities like disposing of unneeded furniture and supplies from storage Occasional help with transportation of goods Pollinator garden work including planting, transplanting and weeding Take photographs for refuge habitat and/or wildlife as requested General maintenance like changing light bulbs, painting, minor carpentry and electrical work Small tool and equipment maintenance Help protect resources and ensure visitor safety by informing visitors of potential safety hazards, alerting visitors to minor rules such as dogs off leash, mushroom/plant collecting, notifying Refuge Law Enforcement Officer of visitors entering closed areas reporting safety hazards and instances of lawbreaking.
Volunteers shall not engage in law enforcement. Physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items in an outdoor setting Depending on interest and skill level, volunteer may participate in Environmental Education and/or Wildlife Interpretation of refuge resources Possibly assist with special events such as National Wildlife Refuge Week, Earth Day, International Migratory Bird Day, and Beach Cleanups Physical Environment: Volunteer will work on uneven terrain and will be required to walk up/down various elevation gains. Normal daytime temperatures range between 45 to 75 degrees. Exposure to direct sun, wind, and rain, without shelter.
Qualifications: Volunteer must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license. Volunteers must wear a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform component which can include a volunteer shirt/vest/or hat and present a positive image of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Volunteers are to provide their own transportation to and from the job. An ability to do strenuous, physically demanding jobs for long periods of time. Time Commitment: 20 hours/week minimum Benefits: The volunteer will gain an overview of the Oregon Coast NWR Complex and the natural resources. An RV site with full hookups or shared residence may be provided. Volunteer has the opportunity to earn the Volunteer America the Beautiful Pass with 250 or more cumulative hours per year. Training: When needed, volunteers will complete safety or naturalist trainings provided by refuge staff or other entities and review all necessary materials.
