Volunteer Activities• Computers • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information • General Assistance Description Note about the 2020 Summer Season Recruitment: We still have opportunities available and look forward to reviewing volunteer candidates through early spring, or until all vacancies are filled. The North Cascades National Park Service Complex consists of North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area, and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. North Cascades is seeking energetic and friendly people to serve as visitor information volunteers in the North Cascades Visitor Center in Newhalem, WA for the 2020 summer season. Volunteers will work 32 hours per week (including holidays and weekends) with 3 consecutive days off each week in exchange for the RV site/amenities provided. Volunteers are required to wear the National Park Service volunteer uniform (shirts and hats provided). Positions will begin in early May and last through mid-September. Duties: Provide excellent customer service and accurate information to park visitors while staffing the busy front desk at the visitor center and answering repetitive questions about trip planning and recreational activities. Explain park rules and regulations in response to inquiries from the public Assist with swearing in junior rangers and issuing badges upon the completion of activities Rove the visitor center and area trails to assist visitors As needed, may assist with sales at the bookstore inside the visitor center which is run by the park’s cooperating association, North Cascades Institute. (optional) Research, develop, and deliver interpretive programs which meet the NPS Interpretive Development Program (IDP) standards, and help visitors make meaningful connections to park resources. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required Favorable federal background investigation Ability to communicate orally Ability to deal with stressful situations Ability to tolerate a variety of weather and working conditions while working outdoors Must possess a valid state driver’s license Ability to collaborate with others as a member of a team to serve the public’s interests About the Area: There is small private campground for employees and volunteers in Newhalem, WA featuring a newly-constructed laundry and shower facility for volunteer use. Near the North Cascades Visitor Center, volunteer campground, and two public campgrounds, the small company town of Newhalem, WA is located approximately 14 miles east of Marblemount, WA. Reliable cell coverage is available through Verizon, and coverage through other cell phone companies is variable or non-existent. There is a small convenience store in Newhalem with limited food options. The closest grocery store is located 35 miles away in Concrete, WA. The closest fuel and restaurants are located 15 miles west in Marblemount. Additional amenities are located in Sedro-Woolley and Burlington, approximately 60 miles from Newhalem.
