RV SITE: SITE DETAILS: OtherDescription: VIP candidates that request housing are required to work 32 hours per week. Housing may be in the form of an apartment on-site or in the nearby Gateway Community of Custer, SD. Furthermore, apartment locations are commonly shared housing with other volunteers, interns, or seasonal staff. Housing may also include a trailer pad for volunteers that use RV units. Please be advised that not all VIP positions allow for housing; arrangements will need to be finalized prior to offering / accepting the VIP position.

Volunteer Activities• Computers • Conservation Education • Office/Clerical • Other • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of NPS DescriptionVisitor center host volunteers during the off-season (January through May 2020) will assist the National Park Service (NPS) through front-line visitor services, interpretive programming, fee collection, and other educational duties as assigned within the Interpretive Division. Work assignments may involve large groups of people, with hectic and (sometimes) stressful working conditions during the holidays, weekends, and while hosting school groups. Individuals may be asked to participate in several specific work projects that involve, but are not limited to, the following assignments: Cash Register Operation – operating a cash register and credit card machine for bookstore sales. Cooperative Association Assistance – restocking of bookstore items and related products, as well as conducting an inventory of supplies for future ordering purposes. Visitor Center Information and Desk Duty – answering questions pertaining to visitor center and surrounding area (“Where’s the restroom?” “Are there vending machines?” “Where does the tour meet?” “How far is it to the town of Custer?”), while also distributing applicable brochures, educational handouts, program flyers, and cave tour promotional material. Light Cleaning – assist in light cleaning duties within visitor facilities (ie: wipe down counter tops, straighten merchandise in bookstore, vacuum exhibit areas). Assist Interpretive Staff – assisting with program set-up and tear-down, serving as an “assistant” chaperone with large school groups, and working as a “gopher” during educational workshops and/or other special events. Library Research – utilizing reference library materials and online search sites for completing projects as assigned. Office Duties – filing agency records, copying resource materials, entering data, folding and collating brochures, and other administrative assignments as needed. Off-Season Projects – working on administrative duties, such as filing reports and completing the necessary research to assist other staff members with reply due dates for regional or national deadlines; compose interpretive text for brochures, wayside exhibits, interior displays, educational pamphlets, site bulletins, and web pages; craft planning documents and/or manuals as needed for specific situations on-site; all off-season projects will be assigned by the Chief of Interpretation and/or designated supervisory park ranger.
