Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Visitor Information DescriptionGeneral Description: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) established Long Term Visitor Areas (LTVAs) throughout Southern California and Arizona to supplement winter visitors’ need for long term dispersed camping while also protecting the desert environment. The BLM El Centro Field Office is seeking hosts at its Pilot Knob LTVA is located approximately 50 miles east of El Centro, CA at the intersection of Interstate 8 and Sidewinder Road. This LTVA may boast over one hundred visitors any time during the popular winter months between September and April. The LTVA Campground Host is expected to stay on-site during the busy season as a public contact, working under the direction of a supervisor and/or the volunteer coordinator. An LTVA pass and electric hookups are provided. Reimbursement up to $250/month is available for a minimum 20 hours of work per week. General Position Duties: Greet all visitors with a positive, courteous, and respectful attitude as they enter the LTVA; and maintain good working relationship with fellow employees, government agency representatives, and visiting public Answer visitor questions and distribute BLM information including rules, regulations, policies, and recreation opportunities. Host must be familiar with local points of interest, nearby facilities, and LTVA rules and regulations. Serve as a point of contact for medical, law enforcement, and other emergencies that require BLM or other agency assistance, when needed. Volunteer hosts do not have the authority to enforce any BLM rules or regulations, or local or state laws. Volunteers are to contact Law Enforcement if an issue arises. Perform administrative tasks such as properly registering campers, issuing permits, and collecting fees following standard procedures and reporting number of visitors/vehicles weekly. Conduct basic campground maintenance such as, but not limited to, stocking restrooms, emptying trash containers and replacing liners, cleaning roadways, picking up trash in and around the LTVA, trimming/pruning vegetation, raking and grooming of sites and public areas Notify BLM or San Bernardino Dispatch (FICC) of any significant maintenance or visitor issues, or unsafe or hazardous conditions. Keep accurate timesheets detailing hours worked and submit timesheet and reimbursement form to supervisor monthly Physical activity/fitness requirements: Generally moderate, may include frequent lifting and bending, climbing into and out of vehicle such as large trucks or OHV’s, transferring equipment no more than 50 lbs. to multiple locations Conduct and Expectations: While in the position of BLM Volunteer Campground Host you are a direct representative of the BLM, and as such you are expected to conduct yourself in the same professional and courteous manner as a paid BLM employee is supposed to do themselves in performance of job duties, visitor contacts, and general interaction with members of the public. BLM Volunteers you are expected to set the example for visitors to the Imperial Sand Dunes by following all ISDRA rules, regulations, and policies.
