Volunteer Activities• Botany • Construction/Maintenance • Conservation Education • Trail/Campground Maintenance • Visitor Information • Fish/Wildlife • General Assistance • Weed/Invasive Species Control Photo Courtesy of FWS DescriptionNestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge is recruiting a long-term on-site habitat restoration, visitor services and maintenance volunteer.  Nestucca Bay NWR is part of the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex and consists of six refuges that are comprised of offshore islands, old growth forest, coastal prairie, estuaries, forested wetlands, lowland pastures, and riparian habitat and uplands. Nestucca Bay NWR is located about six miles south of Pacific City and overlooks the Pacific Ocean.  It is comprised of lowland pasture, coastal prairie and a forested headland with nature trails. The volunteer would serve year round indefinitely in exhange for free refuge housing.  Duties: Volunteer may perform any of the following tasks • Use a variety of power equipment to mow, trim, remove invasive plan species, and maintain recreational trails • Report suspicious behavior by the public to refuge staff or law enforcement • Take photographs of refuge habitat and/or wildlife as requested • Assist with restoration of the coastal prairie by weeding, planting and providing care for native plants • Assist visitors with refuge-related inquiries • Regular pit toilet cleaning and other facilities maintenance Physical Environment: • Work will be on uneven terrain, in direct sun, wind, and rain, without shelter in temperatures between 45 to 70 degrees Qualifications: • Must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license and a means of transportation to and from job sites • Must present a good attitude, friendly demeanor, passion for habitat and wildlife and a positive image of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service • Must be able to pass a Background Investigation • An ability to do strenuous, physically demanding jobs for long periods • Horticulture or gardening experience preferred Commitment • 20 hours/week or 80 hours/month year-round  Benefits • Free housing in 400 sq. ft single bedroom cottage (sorry, no pets) • Utilities, Trash and Wifi included For additional details and requirements, contact: Volunteer Coordinator U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Oregon Coast NWR Complex 2127 SE Marine Science Dr. Newport, OR 97365 (541) 867-4550 oregoncoast@fws.gov HOUSING & AMENITIESType: OtherDescription: A 400 square foot one-bedroom cabin is provided for the volunteer.
