Volunteer Activities• Construction/Maintenance • Tour Guide/Interpretation • Visitor Information • Fish/Wildlife • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of FWS DescriptionHelp raise summer Chinook salmon at Entiat National Fish Hatchery in central Washington State! Located in the Entiat Valley about half an hour from the city of Wenatchee, this hatchery produces record-setting fish. The hard-working crew of 4 deeply appreciates the services a host can provide, and would be glad to have help from April to October, the key months being May to August. Help with covering fish culture on weekends, assist with small maintenance projects, and provide visitor orientation and tours. This position is best suited to curious people willing to learn, able to balance on narrow walkways and carry loads up to 50 pounds. Hosts clean ponds and feed fish on weekends, help with a variety of projects, and greet visitors. To quote 2019 host Joan, “It’s not for someone who just wants a place to camp. You have to love learning.” Host Steve added, “I had no idea [what they do here] is so complex.” The two learned so much that visitors often asked them if they were biologists. Hosts typically help with key aspects of fish culture, from daily basic care to spawning. 2017-2018 hosts Sandy and Jeff loved the routine and the sense of pride shared with the staff in producing healthy salmon for release into the Columbia River system. A high level of trust is placed in Entiat’s hosts, as their help is critical to the success of a generation of fish.
