DESCRIPTION:
This position is a Visitor Information Support Volunteer for the Spring Mountains National Rec Area (SMNRA) and supervised by the Recreation Staff Officer or delegated to a Visitor Information Services Administrator. The volunteer’s primary duty station is at Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway, located on the SMNRA, just 25 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The volunteer’s primary responsibility will be to assist in front desk operations and provide customer service remotely to the public.
Time Commitment: Volunteer will work 24 to 32 hours a week, with weeklong commitments intermittently throughout the year. A minimum weekly schedule includes two 8-hour shifts a week with two days of 4-hour shifts. There are opportunities for volunteering additional hours during peak visitation. A minimum term expected for the position is 5/25-12/31/2021. Position can be extended to be year-round and/or 2022 season. This will be outlined in detail to the volunteer before an agreement is signed and will be clearly noted on the agreement. The time commitment will begin the date established on the agreement and end on the date in the agreement or at the end of the calendar year. Agreements can be renewed annually.
· Transportation: Volunteers must be able to work assigned hours and provide and/or arrange their own transportation to the workplace.
· Volunteer must be at least 18 years old.
· Be willing to accept responsibilities as directed and follow through with and complete assigned responsibilities
· Uniform: A volunteer uniform shirt will be provided to the volunteer and must be worn with clean dark green jeans or slacks. Pants will not be worn or frayed.
· Housing: A trailer pad with hook-ups is provided as housing reimbursement for the position; volunteer must provide their own trailer to utilize the amenities provided.
REIMBURSEMENT:
· A trailer pad with electrical and water hook-ups will be provided to the volunteer for reimbursement. Trailer pad is located 1.5 miles away from the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway, commute to duty station is achievable via walking, bike, or vehicle easily.
DUTIES
The volunteer will assist front desk customer service operations at the Spring Mountain Visitor Gateway (SMVG) including: professionally representing the U.S. Forest Service by providing very high quality customer service; answering visitor questions in person & over telephone, maintaining & cleaning Visitor Center facilities,; opening and closing the facility; providing orientation, information, and interpretation to visitors; telling visitors about Forest Service activities; informing visitors of potential safety hazards; distributing maps and brochures as requested; and all other duties assigned by the Recreation Staff Officer, and Visitor Information Services Administrator. The volunteer will not have access to the federal fees register, safe access, or fee counts. The volunteer may be asked to help with special programs at the Visitor Gateway including, but not limited to volunteer events, stewardship events, and education/outreach events.
The volunteer will also:
· Strive to use methods and language to meet the needs and understanding of the Forest visitor.
· Provide accurate information about the Forest Service and surrounding area.
· Encourage compliance with park regulations through understanding & education.
· Learn and consistently follow all safety practices applicable to job and surroundings in which work is performed. When appropriate, submits constructive suggestions to reduce or eliminate safety hazards to employees and visitors. Review and sign all JHAs applicable to their work.
· Provide quality interpretation and education interactions.
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:
· Have accurate knowledge of recreation opportunities and general ecology on the SMNRA & surrounding public lands.
· Understand the USDA Forest Service mission and know the basic history of the USFS.
· Understand the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area mission, along with the basic history and congressional designation associated with the Recreation Area.
· Understand basic management policies of Spring Mountain National Recreation Area and the U.S. Forest Service
The volunteer will contribute to the effective operations of Spring Mountains National Recreation Area’s visitor information program. The volunteer’s contact with the public will enhance the quality of the visitor experience and may influence the visitor’s opinion, attitude, and enjoyment of the National Forest.
