DESCRIPTION:
Join the team at Fort Bowie National Historic Site! We are currently seeking motivated volunteers that want to be a part of a great team serving visitors at a beautiful and historic park. Fort Bowie is located within the Chiricahua Mountains. The site has a rich and complex history, and the NPS actively preserves the ruins of the fort as well as other cultural resources within the site. Learn more about the park at www.nps.gov/fobo.
Fort Bowie is excited to recruit volunteers for our 2021/2022 season. Visitor Services Volunteers support the interpretive operations at the park by engaging with visitors and helping visitors to connect with the park. Volunteer work will be completed indoors, in the park visitor center, and outdoors, while roving the park. Training and orientation will be provided. This position may require long periods of standing, as well as walking or hiking. A minimum of 32 hours per week is required; a work week includes 8 hour shifts, 4 days a week.
Volunteers live in the park. RV sites are located near our administrative and maintenance buildings, 850 yards from the visitor center. RV spaces can accommodate trailers or motorhomes up to 32 feet. Full hook-ups are available (electricity, water, and sewage). Limited cell phone coverage is available.
Volunteers may be required to operate a government vehicle. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Volunteers are required to wear a uniform.

This position is ideal for anyone looking to be part of an energetic team and to be engaged in a variety of operations. Volunteers will work in the park visitor center, rove the park, greet and welcome visitors, answer questions, and provide orientation about the park and area. In addition, volunteers assist our cooperating association with bookstore sales, operate a cash register, and answer phone calls. Volunteers may assist with park special events. Additional project work may be assigned depending on program needs and volunteer interests. All work will be completed in accordance with park safety protocols to ensure a safe work environment for staff, and to ensure a safe visitor experience for the public.
This position is duty stationed at Fort Bowie, but there is an opportunity to be engaged in volunteer work at two other nearby park sites, Chiricahua National Monument and Coronado National Memorial. Interested volunteers may be able to work a schedule in which they travel between parks to complete volunteer assignments. For example, a volunteer may work two days a week at Fort Bowie NHS and two days a week at Chiricahua NM. - Excellent oral communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Retail sales experience helpful, but not required

Fort Bowie is uniquely designed as a hike-in site. Sitting within the Chiricahua Mountains, the fort and visitor center is accessed via a 3 mile round trip hike. We like to tell people that getting to Fort Bowie is half the adventure!
Volunteer work is completed both indoors and outdoors. Volunteers will work independently in the park visitor center and need to be comfortable working in a remote location with limited services.
Fort Bowie NHS is located in a remote area of Southeastern Arizona. Limited services are available in Bowie AZ, located 13 miles north of the park. The nearest grocery store, medical care, and other services are located in Willcox AZ, 35 miles to the west. More services and amenities are located in Tucson AZ, approximately 120 miles to the west. Volunteers will need a reliable mode of transportation while working at the park.
