ADDRESS: De Soto National Forest; PO Box 248; Wiggins, Mississippi 39577
DEPT: Forest Service
DATES: 4/9/2021 – 10/1/2021
DESCRIPTION:
Campground host position at Big Biloxi Recreation Area on the DeSoto National Forest.
SITE: The Big Biloxi Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Biloxi River. The area provides a cool, refreshing experience from cities nearby. Facilities include 25 camping units, all with utility hook ups; a picnic area with a pavilion; bath house with hot showers; dump station; and a 1/2-mile nature trail. The river is an excellent place to fish for bream, bass, and catfish. Big Biloxi Recreation Area is open year-round unless weather conditions require the area to be closed. This is a fee area and the fee station is located just beyond the entrance gate.
Camp hosts will welcome campers, provide directions, advise visitors of activities occurring within the forest and the surrounding area, answer questions and educate campers on campground rules and regulations. Hosts monitor the campground to ensure visitors occupy their sites in accordance with Forest Service policy, are displaying applicable documentation, and are vacating sites in a timely manner at checkout.
Hosts routinely perform minor maintenance duties such as cleaning bathhouses & restrooms, grounds upkeep (eg. assist with pickup of litter and debris, spraying weeds, limited mowing), cleaning out fire pits and picking up trash. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Record keeping and occasionally filling out forms is also required. Campground hosts are expected to provide timely information to Forest Service recreation staff regarding potential safety concerns as well as maintenance and repair needs raised by visitors or through personal observations. Two of the most important jobs as campground host are to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public and assist staff in protecting forest resources.
Hosts are expected to wear a FS volunteer uniform vest when working with visitors. Hosts are to arrive with adequate housing for the length of their commitment. Trailers, campers or motor homes are recommended. Hosts are provided a camping site with electrical (50 amp), water and sewage hookups at no charge.
