ADDRESS: Kanab Field Office

DEPT: Bureau of Land Management

DATES: 6/1/2021 – 9/30/2021

DESCRIPTION:

The Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness area offers hikers opportunities to experience canyons, cliffs, and wild formations. The purpose of this steward program is to encourage safety practices and promote wilderness concepts to the visitors recreating in this area. Wire Pass Trailhead is used to access the Coyote Buttes North and Buckskin Gulch. Trailhead stewards will greet visitors and encourage safety practices, promote wilderness concepts, and inspire Leave No Trace ethics.

The purpose of the trailhead steward program is to have volunteers present at the trailhead to encourage safety practices and promote wilderness concepts to the visitors recreating in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness area. This helps to preserve the area and prevent emergencies by making these contacts at the trailhead. The volunteer will provide information to the visiting public about the area and policies.

Trailhead stewards greet visitors and encourage safety practices, promote wilderness concepts, and inspire Leave No Trace ethics. Being at the trailhead, volunteers will also provide aid if needed for emergency response situations.

This is a seasonal volunteer position that will run from June through September. This is the minimum commitment. One or two months can be added to either or both ends based on the availability of the volunteers. This is a position for a volunteer couple or pair that will work together to ensure that the trailhead is covered from 0600 – 1400 daily. A covered RV/trailer pad with hookups is provided along with laundry facilities.

Orientation will include attending a walk-in lottery, a field orientation that will include a hike into Wire Pass to the confluence with the Buckskin and a hike out to the Wave. These hikes will assist with knowledge of the routes and conditions that may be needed when communicating with visitors.

DUTIES
Trailhead stewards will greet visitors and provide information in an appropriate manner to the visiting public about the area and policies. A high number of visitor contacts should be expected. Typically, people hike early during the hotter months and start later when the weather cools down. Volunteers will place fee reminders on vehicles. The volunteer will record visitors on a daily log sheet. Stewards will also assist the safety patrol volunteers by tallying trailhead visitors and provide them a list of permit holders/contacts and will be the source of distribution for the volunteer kits used by the safety patrol. Volunteers may perform any or all of the following duties; contacting visitors at Wire Pass Trailhead and ensure that everything is satisfactory and party is well prepared, advising visitors about the permit requirement and lottery system, providing safety and area information, educating visitors about Leave No Trace practices and backcountry ethics, picking up litter in and around the parking area, provide water to hikers with inadequate supplies and those returning from the hike, and reporting situations such as hikers in distress to appropriate BLM staff and/or law enforcement.
