Volunteer Activities• Campground Host Photo Courtesy of NPS Description*This opportunity is for January-December, 2020. Applicants must be able to commit to at least two month terms. Campground Hosts are the official greeters for the Hot Springs National Park campground and serve as a vital communication link between campground visitors and the park. Responsibilities: Welcoming visitors to Hot Springs National Park and the campground; Visiting with campers and conducting inspections throughout the campground area to: a) answer questions about Hot Springs National Park, the campground, local amenities and services, b) identify issues that need to be addressed; Informing visitors about park programs, events and activities; Contacting park officials to answer unique/difficult questions and to address issues; Serving as an important link between park law enforcement officials and the campground (informing, not enforcing); Monitoring safety at the campground and reporting hazards to appropriate park officials; Informing campers how the campground registration system operates; Conducting morning and afternoon surveys of the campground to count the number of vacant campsites and obtain a physical count of campers at Gulpha Gorge campground; Cleaning vacant campsites after visitor departure (such as picking up trash, extinguishing fires, maintaining fire pits and grills). Performing other duties, including light maintenance (such as maintaining restroom appearance throughout the day), restocking restroom supplies, and picking up litter. These responsibilities constitute less than 20% of the Hosts’ time; and, May provide daily or intermittent activities for adult and youth campers at announced times. These may include interpretive, educational and Junior Ranger programs, and be based on the Host’s abilities. Requirements: Couples must complete a minimum of 24 hours/week (per person). Singles must complete a minimum of 32 hours/week. Must commit to a minimum of eight weeks of volunteer work. Must be willing to work with the public, staff, and other volunteers.
