DESCRIPTION:
Tucson Field Office seeking enthusiastic volunteer to provide oversight of the Historic Empire Ranch Headquarters and recreation sites in the Las Cienegas NCA.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Tucson Field Office is seeking a site host volunteer to assist with being the eyes and ears of the BLM at the Historic Empire Ranch Headquarters located in the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA). The site host position is located southeast of Tucson, AZ (45-minute drive from the Tucson International Airport) along State Highway 83, just north of the town of Sonoita. The terrain is mostly upland grasslands with mesquite, cottonwood, and oak trees at an elevation between 4800-5000 feet. The site host location features electric, water, and septic hookups provided by the BLM.
The responsibilities for the site host include the following:
- Work with BLM Park Ranger on assignments
- Answer public questions about the LCNCA
- Light maintenance of the Empire Ranch Headquarters grounds and loop trail
- Keep public flyers stocked at the Huachuca House Visitor Contact Station
- Monitor the inside of the Empire Ranch House and adjacent buildings
- Upkeep information boards at key recreation sites in the LCNCA
- Keep daily monitoring report of LCNCA visitation numbers
- Monitor vault toilets daily
- Upkeep maintenance equipment
Work schedule is negotiable between site host and BLM Park Ranger.
Site Host is required to participate in an on-site orientation by the BLM Park Ranger. Training is scheduled between BLM Park Ranger and Site Host.
The Town of Sonoita located 15-20 minutes from the LCNCA has a post office, gas station, restaurants, and a small convenience store. For additional services the volunteer can drive to Tucson, about a 40-45 minute drive northwest of the LCNCA.

Site Host volunteer experience is recommended but not necessarily a requirement for the position.
Knowledge of hand tools
Knowledge of mechanized equipment for landscaping
Knowledge of customer service skills
Knowledge of technical devices such as laptops, tablets, or smartphones
Terrain is mostly flat with grassland environment. Temperatures vary at 5,000 foot level. The area can experience snow on occasion during the winter months with lows reaching to the low 20s at times. Temperatures in the winter are typically between the upper 50s to upper 60s. Spring is pleasant with highs in the 70s to lower 80s. The summer months are warm but not too extreme with temperatures in the mid to lower 90s. Summer rains occur in late June to early August and temperatures can drop from the 90s to upper 60s.
