ADDRESS: San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge; 6801 CR 306; Brazoria, Texas 77422

DEPT: Fish & Wildlife Service

DATES: 10/1/2021 – 9/30/2022

DESCRIPTION:

San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge – Resident Maintenance Volunteer

Stretching inland from the Gulf Coast beaches and marshes into the bottomland forests of the Brazos and San Bernard River watersheds, the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge provides vital habitat for resident wildlife, wintering waterfowl, and other migratory birds, to include neotropical migrants. This approximately 69,000 acre refuge contains some of the last remnants of old growth Columbia Bottomland forests in coastal Texas.

The refuge seeks general maintenance volunteers who will assist refuge staff with trail maintenance, mowing, and upkeep of facilities and equipment, as well as other projects. Volunteers play an important role in refuge maintenance and public use programs. Volunteers directly affect the quality and success of refuge operations; visitors’ safety, comfort, and enjoyment; and the public’s understanding and image of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

DUTIES

The refuge maintenance volunteer will primarily assist refuge staff with upkeep of refuge facilities, equipment, and public use areas. Volunteers are relied upon to help with mowing, maintaining trails, and general upkeep of refuge facilities, including the field office, bunkhouse, and volunteer cabin, as well as cleaning public use restrooms. Additional duties may vary depending on individual interests, skills, and talents, as well as specific projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates should have experience operating power equipment and zero turn mowers, and possess basic skills in carpentry, fence repair, electrical, plumbing, and small engine maintenance and repair. The refuge lacks a Maintenance Mechanic position, so mechanical skills are greatly appreciated. FWS Off-road Utility Vehicle (ORUV) Safety training and/or FWS Heavy Equipment Safety training for agricultural tractors, skid steer, and backhoe is a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

San Bernard NWR is located in Brazoria, Texas situated near several coastal communities where grocery stores, restaurants, shopping, and beaches are a short 20-30 minute drive from your RV site. We have RV pads available with electrical, water, and sewer provided. A volunteer cabin with shared laundry facilities, two refrigerators, and a full kitchen is provided on site for communal use.

We are flexible regarding work schedule, however, we do require a minimum of 24 hours per week of service. There may be occasions when volunteers are asked to assist with projects outside of their normal work schedule. Generally, volunteers do not work on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. A minimum of 3 months is required and longer commitments are always appreciated. We are flexible on start and end dates.
