Cape Lookout National Seashore — Front Desk Visitor Center Volunteer at Park Headquarters
This position is for a front desk volunteer at the park headquarters facility.
Open dates are: 10/1/2021-3/1/2022
Volunteering over the winter season at Cape Lookout National Seashore is often quiet, with minimal visitation from December 1st-March 1st. Volunteers should be comfortable with a quiet, slower paced environment during these months.
In order to qualify for an RV Pad housing area, volunteer must commit to 4 days/week of visitor center coverage.
Volunteer couples may split this coverage from day-to-day, but the total of four days of coverage per week is required.
The daily work schedule is 8 hours, from 8:45-5:15 with a 30 minute lunch break.
The Volunteer RV area is located in a communal area which is only accessible to staff and other volunteers. Location is directly adjacent to a waterfront area and on the edge of our walking trail.
Harkers Island has multiple smaller grocery and convenience stores within 10 minutes. Other larger stores, medical services, etc. are available in either Beaufort or Morehead City (Roughly 30-40 minutes away)
Typical duties include: answering phones, responding to voicemails, mailing out letters, general office assistance, etc.
Volunteers also conduct informal interpretation about park resources and should be comfortable speaking with diverse members of the public.

The work environment is primarily inside a climate-controlled building located at the park headquarters facility on Harkers Island, NC.
The outdoor climate during these months may be cold, and sometimes stormy. Temperatures occasionally dip below freezing during the months of January & February, with snow and ice being rare but not unheard of.
Volunteer uniforms, including a sweatshirt and windbreaker, are provided.
