The overall goal of this position is to perform a variety of administrative/clerical duties. Volunteer will also assist staff in conducting community outreach in the local community and to assist in hosting volunteer event in the park.
The Volunteer Program Office is responsible for managing and overseeing Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s volunteer program. On average, Lake Mead has over 3000 volunteers who provide assistance to the park. The volunteer assisting the Volunteer Program Office will be providing a variety of support services to aid in the management of the overall program. The volunteer will provide clerical assistance, assisting with community outreach, and some event support.
Clerical Duties:Volunteer performs general clerical and administrative assistance which includes data entry, filing, scanning documents, and photo copying. Volunteer may assemble documents for trainings held by staff and write articles for our volunteer newsletter. Volunteer is authorized to use government computer, telephones, photocopy machine, fax machines, laminators and other equipment to accomplish their duties.
Volunteer may sit or stand for long periods of time. Volunteer’s duties are primarily accomplished in an office setting. Volunteer is authorized to use a government computer and have access to Headquarters only when a background check is favorably adjudicated and has taken all the proper IT courses. All Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Policies regarding using and operating government equipment will be explained and given to the volunteer.
Community Outreach: The volunteer will assist an employee or other volunteers at a community outreach event or volunteer fair. The volunteer will assist with setting up the outreach booth. This may include tables, chairs, shade structures, table cloths, outreach brochures and fliers, and park maps. The volunteer may unload the outreach container from the government vehicle. The volunteer will greet and hold brief conversations with the public about Lake Mead and volunteer opportunities. The volunteer will assist NPS staff in retrieving contact information from members of the public who are interested in becoming volunteers. The volunteer will assist with breaking down the display area and provide event statistics and other event matters to the Volunteer Program Office. The volunteer may ride/drive a government vehicle when necessary.
Events could include, but are not limited to, any of the following:
- Recruitment booths at concessioners, local businesses, university/colleges, community events, and military bases
- Park special events such as Junior Ranger Day, and other festivals
Event Support: Occasionally, volunteer may perform duties and responsibilities at various field locations at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The volunteer will assist a park employee or another volunteer to host on a volunteer event. Volunteer will assist with some or all of the following duties:
- Setup and break down: Event Assistants will assist with setup up the registration equipment from the trailer, truck or other vehicle. This may include tables, chairs, shade structures, table cloths, volunteer forms and setting the equipment up in the designated registration area. Volunteers may unload tools from the event trailer and/or volunteer truck. This may include trash cans with litter pickers, buckets, bags, gloves, and other accessories related to litter removal, restoration or other projects.
- Registration: Event Assistants will register event volunteers on site who will participate for that day. Event Assistants will be given instructions on what forms need to be filled out by adults and youth and where to store completed forms in a secure location.
- Project: Event Assistants will assist with facilitation the project by organizing and handing out equipment, gloves, and water to event volunteers.
- Communication: Event Assistants will maintain excellent communication with the supervisor, park employees, and event volunteers. Event Assistants will greet and thank event volunteers during the event.
- Traveling: Event Assistants may travel in a government vehicle to the event site. Event Assistants may operate a government vehicle when necessary as long as they provide a 3 year driving record from their state’s DMV with their supervisor’s approval.

The work is primarily sedentary in an office setting. There is some standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 30 lbs.), carrying, and general cleaning.
There may be some work in the field to accompany an employee or another volunteer to host a volunteer event or go to a community outreach event. Outreach work is generally performed in busy, high traffic areas such as local businesses, colleges/universities, or marinas.
Events are typically performed in highly populated areas with visitors but can be performed in remote areas of the park. For any outdoor work, temperatures can vary widely throughout the year with winter temperatures at 30° F and summer temperatures at over 115° F. Volunteers may encounter various weather conditions such as rain, wind, and direct sun. The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, and walking over rough, uneven or rock surfaces. Venomous reptiles, insects and thorny vegetation may be present in the area. Vegetation and dust may contain irritants and cause allergic reactions.
Volunteers must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time while maintaining excellent customer service. Volunteers may walk up to a mile on uneven surfaces. Volunteers may push, pull, bend and lift up to 25 pounds.
Event Assistants must wear all Personal Protective Equipment required for the task being performed; this may include gloves, glasses, high visible safety vest, etc. Any volunteer who cannot meet the physical requirements of the position should let the Assistant Volunteer Coordinator or Volunteer Program Manager know so they can be assigned to lighter duty.
