DESCRIPTION:

This volunteer opportunity is at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The park is currently looking for motivated enthusiastic volunteers to share their passion for historic preservation, history, education, and the environment with visitors from around the world.

The Maintenance Assistant Volunteer will assist with the maintenance of assets, associated with the Johnson City and LBJ Ranch site, leaving them unimpaired for future generations to enjoy. As a result, volunteer will provide visitors an opportunity to have a safe, enjoyable, and educational park experience.

Lyndon B. Johnson NHP is located in beautiful Hill Country and is divided into two districts. The park headquarters is in Johnson City, approximately 48 miles west of Austin, and 64 miles north of San Antonio. The LBJ Ranch is located in Stonewall, TX which is 14 miles West of the park headquarters.

 

Housing available for volunteers upon request and if available. 32 hours per week are required.

 

DUTIES

Volunteer will be an integral member of the park’s Maintenance team. The main function of this position is to provide assistance and supplement skill functions within the maintenance divisions daily and special projects tasks. Volunteer tasks associated are as listed, but not inclusive:

  • Grounds maintenance
  • Roads and trails maintenance
  • Trash pickup
  • Structural maintenance
  • Custodial (vacuuming, replacing soap, paper towels, and toilet paper, empty trash and recycling, sweep, mop and wax floors, wash windows and etc.)
  • Minor electrical repairs
  • Minor plumbing repairs
  • Maintenance administrative duties

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is looking for volunteer with the following skills:

  • Skilled in the safe and expedient operation of hand tools and hand-held power tools (hammers, shovels, hoes, levels, squares, carpenter level, plum and chalk lines, vacuum, floor scrubbers and polishers, cordless drill, etc.)
  •  Must be able to maneuver motorized equipment in open areas, confined spaces, on even ground, in traffic and other congested areas involving pedestrians and vehicles efficiently and safely.
  • All volunteers may be able to safely operate, control and motorized equipment only after completing all operating and safety training courses.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Be able to follow National Park Service environmental & historic preservation rules.
  • Works well both as a team and independently
