ADDRESS: Alum Creek Lake; 5905 Lewis Center Road; Lewis Center, Ohio 43035

DEPT: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

DATES: 5/1/2022 – 9/30/2022

DESCRIPTION:

Seeking friendly individual or couple to assist with operating the Alum Creek Lake Visitor Center from May 1 – September 30, 2022.

Volunteers at the Alum Creek Lake Visitor Center help answer visitor questions as well as helping them learn about all that Alum Creek Lake has to offer, the Corps’ story, and provoke learning of the many aspects of the area. Volunteers assist the Ranger staff with these goals by greeting and orienting visitors at the information desks, selling America the Beautiful Federal Lands passes, providing personalized visitor interactions while roving throughout the visitor center, staffing interpretive locations, and assisting with special events. The visitor center generally has a relaxed pace which allows for quality interactions with the visitors. Occasionally visitation is calmer, which allows volunteers time to read or work on other projects. The project is staffed by 7 full-time employees who are solely responsible for the maintenance and operation of the nearly 50 year old facilities. Volunteers are a crucial part of our team, and significantly improve visitors experiences in the park!

DUTIES

Volunteers provide high quality interpretive services to enhance visitor experiences in the visitor center, including:

·        Staff visitor center

·        Greet visitors and answer questions about the site and surrounding area

·        Educate visitors about park rules

·        Provide informal or formal interpretive programs

·        Assist Rangers with positive image and safety of Visitor Center and surrounding grounds through housekeeping, litter pick-up, and similar tasks.

Volunteers can assist with other duties if desired such as maintaining the native gardens, filling bird feeders, assisting with special events, assisting maintenance with projects, office work, or special interest projects.

Volunteers will be expected to comply with project, local, and federal regulations and guidelines. Such guidelines include Department of Defense COVID-19 risk reduction protocols as communicated during training and updated as protocols change.

· Comfortable interacting/speaking with the public

· Desire to meet and interact with diverse visitors

· Experience/skills in interpretation/education

· Cash handling, opening/closing cash reconciliation forms

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Volunteers will be working mostly indoors, independently from staff while working at the information desk. Staff are nearby to respond to issues or emergencies. Volunteers may be asked occasionally to assist with special events that are indoors or outdoors.

Volunteers are expected to interact with the public utilizing state and site COVID safety protocols. Clear acrylic barriers are at the information desk, if masks are required they will be provided, regular sanitation protocols are in place.

Physical Demands: Volunteers should be able to stand or walk for moderate periods of time, should be willing to intermittently work outdoors in hot weather, walking up to a half mile. Adjustable-height seating and anti-fatigue floor mats are available while staffing information desk.

Scheduling Demands: A typical work week consists of Friday – Monday from 10-5. If volunteer is a couple, it is not required for both volunteers to be in the visitor center at the same time – shifts may be split between the individuals as desired, as long as the core hours are covered by at least 1 person.  Breaks will be covered by USACE staff, or other volunteers.
