DESCRIPTION:
This position is for a seasonal volunteer who agrees to serve in a National Forest Campground. Hosts are friendly, enjoy the outdoors and are eager to learn and share their knowledge.
The North River Ranger District is looking for a single volunteer or couple to fill a campground host opportunity at North River Campground. North River is a quiet campground in Augusta County, VA. The North River runs around the campground which contains 9 sites. It is also nearby popular trails including the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail, the Staunton Dam Day Use Area, and Elkhorn Lake. The site is approximately 45 minutes to Harrisonburg and closest to the town of Stokesville.
Schedule: Hosts are expected to be availible at campground Friday – Sunday including holiday weekends. Commitment to the entire recreation season from May to October is also expected.
Amenities: Campsite suitable for RV/Trailer provided free of charge with access to propane. Housing not provided, host must provide own RV or Trailer – tents are not suitable for length of stay. Campground is equipped with vault toilets. No running water, cell service limited.
- Provide visitor information
- Communicate rules and restrictions courteously to visitors
- Welcome visitors and assist them in checking into their sites
- Clean restrooms as needed
- Perform minor maintenance
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and friendliness when interacting with visitors
- Complete other projects as necessary
Duties may vary depending on on individual preferences and abilities and are agreed to in writing prior to the Host’s arrival.
Experience camping, working, or recreating outside in remote settings is required. Volunteer must feel comfortable:
- Working and communicating directly with the public and Forest Service employees.
- Assisting visitors inexperienced in camping as needed
- Working outside in hot and humid weather
Volunteer should be prepared to show proof of vaccination.
