ADDRESS: Modoc National Forest; 225 West 8th Street; Alturas, California 96101
DEPT: Forest Service
DATES: 5/27/2022 – 10/3/2022
DESCRIPTION:
Because Howard’s Gulch is relatively small, host(s) are asked to provide general oversight and management of nearby non-fee site campgrounds such as Rush Creek campgrounds, Cottonwood Flat Campground, Big Sage Campground, Jane’s Reservoir Campground and Reservoir F Campground.
Howard’s Gulch Campground features 10 sites located just north of Canby, Calif. on the Modoc National Forest. Set back off Hwy 139 in a tree lined gulch, this campground is a very quiet and pleasant place to spend the weekend or an entire vacation. This small but beautiful area features a campground, a Basin and Range Birding Trail and the nearby Auto Tour Route and Howard’s Gulch Interpretative Sites. Full-service communities in the vicinity include Alturas, Calif. and Klamath Falls, Ore.
Because Howard’s Gulch is relatively small, host(s) are asked to provide general oversight and management of nearby non-fee site campgrounds such as Rush Creek campgrounds, Cottonwood Flat Campground, Big Sage Campground, Jane’s Reservoir Campground and Reservoir F Campground.
Camp hosts are expected to camp on site through the season (Memorial Day weekend though Labor Day weekend) and provide general oversight and management of the facility, information to visitors and coordinate with Forest Service staff on a frequent basis. Start and end dates are flexible. Hosts are welcome to stay through October.
Along with free camping, a daily stipend is available for each host providing services that day. Work schedules are flexible, though being present at least five days a week—including weekends and holidays—is expected. A Forest Service vehicle can be provided and supplies such as propane can be reimbursed.
