W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir, Wilkesboro, NC, is seeking an individual or couple to fill one Interpretive Assistant position at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir for the 2022 recreation season.
W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking an individual or couple to fill one Interpretive Assistant position at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir for the 2022 recreation season from April 1 to October 31. The assistant must provide his/her own RV/Travel Trailer and reside on a provided campsite with full hookups inside Volunteer Village during the duration of the season. Amenities include water, electric, sewer, internet access, and laundry facilities located at Volunteer Village.
The assistant will assist the Interpretive Program Ranger in developing and delivering informal and formal interpretive programs to the public at the campgrounds, day use parks, Visitor Assistance Center (VAC), Environmental Education Center (EEC), and off-project venues such as community festivals, YMCA, colleges, RV/boat shows, etc. The assistant will work 25-30 hours per week (25 hours for an individual, 30 shared hours for couples). The assistant must be available to work indoors and outdoors. While most interpretive programs occur on weekends (Friday evening to Sunday evening), some programs may occur during the weekdays. The schedule will be made by the Volunteer Coordinator in coordination with the Interpretive Program Ranger. See duties in DUTIES section.
When scheduled or on duty, hosts will:
1. Wear issued volunteer clothing.
2. Develop and deliver informal and formal interpretive programs.
3. Answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities.
4. Conduct tours of the VAC/EEC, trails, etc.
5. Inform visitors of park rules, regulations, and policies.
6. Collect comment cards and surveys.
7. Perform general maintenance on interpretive trails and bulletin boards.
8. Relay complaints, compliance issues, overcrowding, and maintenance actions to Park Ranger staff.
9. Report administratively to the Volunteer Coordinator and functionally to the Interpretive Program Ranger.
1. Prior camping experience.
2. Prior experience with customer service.
3. Ability to sit or stand for significant periods of time.
4. Friendly, cheerful, organized, and professional manner.
5. Basic administrative skills.
6. Basic maintenance skills.
7. Physical ability to lift approximately 30 pounds and carry for 25 feet.
8. Desire to meet and interact with people from varied backgrounds.
9. Appearance should be neat and reflect positively on the Corps.
10. Ability to remain calm in busy situations.
11. Visually able to spot safety hazards and take prompt appropriate action to correct in accordance with training provided

Assistants will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. Work will be both indoors and outdoors and will involve frequent interactions with adults and children. Interpretive programs may be held at various locations including swim beaches, boat ramps, amphitheaters, campgrounds, trails, classrooms, festivals, etc.
The VAC and EEC are co-located in same building with the EEC located downstairs and accessible by inside stairways or an outside entrance. Climbing stairs on occasions may be required.
The lake is located within a 15–20-minute drive of restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, auto and RV repair shops, entertainment venues, and medical facilities. Average high temperatures range from low 70’s to high 80’s with average low temperatures ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s during May to September. On average, Wilkesboro has 213 sunny days and gets 50 inches of rain per year.
