DESCRIPTION:

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir, Wilkesboro, NC, is seeking an individual or couple to fill one Trails / General Maintenance Volunteer position at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir for the 2022 recreation season.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking an individual or couple to fill one Trails / General Maintenance position at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir for the 2022recreation season from April 1 to October 31. The maintainer must provide own RV/Travel Trailer and reside on a provided campsite with full hookups inside Volunteer Village during the duration of the season. Amenities include water, electric, sewer, internet access, and laundry facilities located at Volunteer Village.

The maintainer will assist the Trails Program Ranger in maintaining 40 plus miles of multi-purpose(hiking, biking, archery, disc golf) trails as well as performing light general maintenance at day use parks, campgrounds, wildlife management areas, etc. as needed. The maintainer will work 25-30hours per week (25 hours for an individual, 30 shared hours for couples). The maintainer must be available to work outdoors and able to hike or bike the trails and, if trained and qualified, operate a utility vehicle and/or a chainsaw. Due to unpredictable weather, the maintainer must be flexible in scheduling. The schedule will be made by the Volunteer Coordinator in coordination with the Trails Program Ranger. See duties in DUTIES section.

 

 

 

DUTIES

When scheduled or on duty, maintainers will:

1.   Wear issued volunteer clothing.

2.   Inspect trails for downed trees and safety hazards.

3.   Maintain trails in accordance with prescribed standards.

4.   Assist Rangers and first responders with rescue actions.

5.   Answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities.

6.   Inform visitors of park rules, regulations, and policies.

7.   Collect comment cards and surveys.

8.   Perform general maintenance (painting, repairing, etc.) on facilities, signs, and bulletin boards around the project.

9.   Relay complaints, compliance issues, overcrowding, and maintenance actions to Park Ranger staff.

10. Report administratively to the Volunteer Coordinator and functionally to the Trails Program Ranger.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

1.   Prior camping experience.

2.   Prior experience with customer service.

3.   Ability to sit or stand for significant periods of time.

4.   Friendly, cheerful, organized, and professional manner.

5.   Basic administrative skills.

6.   Basic maintenance skills.

7.   Physical ability to lift approximately 30 pounds and carry for 25 feet.

8.   Desire to meet and interact with people from varied backgrounds.

9.   Appearance should be neat and reflect positively on the Corps.

10.  Ability to remain calm in busy situations.

11. Visually able to spot safety hazards and take prompt appropriate action to correct in accordance with training provided.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Maintainers will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. Work will be primarily outdoors and involve walking on uneven and steep terrain. Work will involve occasional interaction with adults and children.

 

The lake is located within a 15–20-minute drive of restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, auto and RV repair shops, entertainment venues, and medical facilities. Average high temperatures range from low 70’s to high 80’s with average low temperatures ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s during May to September. On average, Wilkesboro has 213 sunny days and gets 50 inches of rain per year.

Free full hookups (water, electric, sewer) provided in exchange for 25 hours for individuals and 30 shared hours for couples.
