DESCRIPTION:
Roving volunteer host (single or couple) is sought to work in 12-Mile Canyon located east of Mayfield, Utah from late June into early September of 2021. A campsite and subsistence will be provided.
The Sanpete Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal National Forest in central Utah is looking for a roving volunteer camp host (single or couple) for our developed campgrounds and dispersed camping areas in 12-Mile Canyon. This host position will be focused in the 12-Mile Canyon east of Mayfield, Utah and run from late June through early September. Work schedule is typically Thursday through Monday with Tuesday and Wednesday as days off. Days off can be spent relaxing in the campground or exploring the amazing landscapes in and around the forest. General tasks include posting reservations, cleaning and maintaining campsites and facilities, ensuring visitor safety and compliance with regulations, and acting as a liaison between the public and the Forest Service. This volunteer position is eligible for reimbursement of expenses as delineated in a volunteer agreement.
Hosts will be provided an RV site either at Twin Lake or 12 Mile Flat depending on their preference. These sites involve dry camping. There is no water, sewer, or electrical hookups. Closest drinking water can be found at Ferron Reservoir, 3 miles from 12-Mile Flat Campground.
- Campground Patrols and Maintenance: Clean up camp sites, shovel out fire pits
- Facilities Maintenance: Clean, sweep, mop, sanitize restrooms and as well as other light facility maintenance.
- Campsite Reservations: Post current reservations, ensure reservations are up to date and correct, check for fee compliance.
- Forest Service Liaison: Work with Forest Service personnel to ensure public safety, campground maintenance, compliance and resources needs are managed.

12-Mile Flat Campground is located beneath the shadow of Mt. Baldy near the top of the Wasatch Plateau, along the Skyline Drive Scenic Backway at 10,120 feet elevation. Surrounding vegetation includes open wildflower-filled meadows interspersed with spruce and fir. There are 13 single sites, one double site, and 2 group sites at this campground . There are 4 restrooms to take care of. This site is generally at 85% capacity during the weekends and less than 25% during the weekdays.
Twin Lake Campground is located much lower in 12-mile Canyon amongst juniper trees at 7,950 feet elevation. It has 20 single sites and 1 group site with 2 restrooms. This site is generally at 40% capacity during the weekends and less than 10% during the weekdays.
Other popular areas and activities in 12-Mile Canyon include:
· Spring Hill–a very popular dispersed site with 2 restrooms.
· 6-mile pond–a popular area for fishing. One restroom is located here.
· Town Reservoir—a popular destination for fishing in the early season and dispersed camping thru the summer. One restroom is located here.
The entire 12-Mile Canyon area features many miles of the Arapeen OHV Trail System, a 400-mile network of connecting roads and trails for OHV enthusiasts.
