DESCRIPTION:
Grand Canyon’s Campground Hosts ensure that park visitors have as safe and enjoyable a visit as possible, and in the process, have an enjoyable time themselves!
8:00am – 11:00am (3 HRS)
At 8 a.m. please return park radio to CG Kiosk.
Take golf cart and start cleaning vacant sites by emptying fire pits and picking up “micro trash”. Check for tent pegs and clotheslines. In your rounds, if you find fuel containers, retrieve and deposit in the shopping basket behind the country store.
When cleaning fire pits, feel with bare hand the temperature of coals. Charcoal is the worst culprit. If suspect, put coals in metal bucket, dose with water and stir with metal tent peg. Dump ashes in ash dumpster located in the tent only area with the wet ones on top. Frequently empty ash buckets, so your buckets don’t get too heavy.
At 10 am, go to CG Kiosk, and turn over golf cart to the rangers for them to complete the10 am campground rounds.
11:00am – 12:00am – Campground Host Break
12:00am – 2:00pm(2HRS)
After the ranger completes the 10am campground rounds, the ranger will return the golf cart to the host site. Please continue cleaning sites, ending with the group sites.
2:00pm-3:00pm
Lunch Break/enjoy the Grand Canyon….
3:00pm-5:00pm (2 HRS)
Rove campground, talk to visitors, pick up trash.
5:00pm-8:00pm
Dinner time /Break
8:00pm – 9:00pm (1 HR)
A little after 8 pm, the on- duty ranger will bring you the park radio and give you a list of late arrivals and emergency sites. This is just for your information. When visitors knock on your door later and ask for help in finding their site, use the late arrival list to assist them. Give them a map with their site noted.
At 8:15 pm, do a walkabout and check for running generators. Leave your outside light on overnight, as someone may contact you with questions or an emergency during the night. In case of an emergency, contact Park Dispatch 928-638-7805 or use your park radio.
Major Duties
· Maintain own campsite in accordance with all park regulations and set a good example for other campers.
· Maintain a neat, tidy and organized work area.
· Show up for scheduled hours and days.
· Interpret campground regulations and directions and assist the camper as best as possible.
· Report any hazards in or out of the campground to the campground rangers.
· Periodically make rounds in order to update campground rangers and remind campers of rules and regulations. Any law enforcement issues will be reported to staff rangers when on duty or Law Enforcement after hours.
· Perform minor campground maintenance.
· Clean 30-50 fire pits daily.
· Assist campers after hours.
· Drive a government vehicle e.g. truck or golf cart.
· Periodically, distribute comment forms to campers for positive and negative feedback.
Required Training or Certifications
Valid Driver’s License. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Requirements
· Be happy, healthy, and willing to give 100%.
· Be in good physical health, enjoy meeting and talking with people, be friendly and helpful to all park visitors.
· Can deal effectively with stressful situations.
· Work a minimum of 32 Hours per week per volunteer.
· Work 4, 8-hour days, with three days off.
· Be a team player.
· Have a professional and courteous demeanor.

Use of Personal Equipment
Per Director’s Order 7 Volunteer-in-Parks 6.4, when the Grand Canyon National Park accepts a volunteer’s offer to use his/her own personal property or equipment for official purposes, and that property is lost, damaged, or destroyed, the VIP may be reimbursed for the loss or a depreciated portion of the loss, subject to the rules and conditions of the agency’s personal property claim program detailed in the Department of the Interior Departmental Manual, 451 DM 3. A statement that the VIP offers to provide and use such equipment as part of his/her official duties must be included on Optional Form 301a. Moreover, the form must specifically identify and describe the personal property being used. This must be discussed verbally with volunteers and included in their service description.
Authority for this reimbursement is Federal Employee Status for Volunteers (16USC 558 (c)), and the Grand Canyon National Park may reimburse up to $2,500.00 total for volunteer supplied equipment required for this assignment accidentally damaged or lost incidental to performing the duties in this job description. The reimbursement limit shall apply, per incident, and even if the claimed loss exceeds that amount. Claims must be filed using US Department of Interior Form DI-570. The list can be a separate document to allow for a better description and this document must be provided to the park, with a copy to the volunteer:
· Serial number
· Description of any damage and repair or replacement estimates
· Ensure functionality
· Photos and/or video of the equipment being used to document any existing damage
Reimbursements
The only reimbursement authorized is for the use of personal property used to perform volunteer duties. Incidental expenses.

The volunteer will be provided an RV pad.
Physical Demands
Moderate to high physical effort is required. Some duties require sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time. Some duties may also require strenuous physical activity such as technical climbing, lifting, and carrying heavy items over rugged, precipitous, and sometimes unstable terrain. Work may require lifting and carrying moderately heavy items (up to 30 pounds), bending, hiking, and stooping for long periods.
Work Environment
Work is conducted in natural and developed areas of the park. Work in the developed areas can vary from rocky, uneven terrain, to active construction areas. The volunteer may be exposed to irritants such as plants, dead brush, and insect bites.
Duty Station
This position is duty stationed at the North Rim. If work is required outside the North Rim and requires overnight at a temporary duty station, the volunteer will be put in the National Park Service travel program so the volunteer will receive a per diem and lodging (if needed).
Living Conditions/Location
The commute from housing to work location could be a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute drive. The volunteer will provide their own living accommodations e.g. RV, the park will pay for electric and propane. There is no Wi-Fi in the housing. However, there is a market near housing that has Wi-Fi. There is a market and multiple restaurants inside the park. However, the market is limited and expensive. The nearest town that has a grocery and retail stores is Kanab, UT which is 80 miles away from the park. Northern Arizona has a unique climate depending on the time of year, it can be snowing or over 100 degrees. Please pack many layers because even if it is hot during the day, temperatures can reach freezing at night. Northern Arizona is also very dry and high altitude, prepare yourself for that type of environment living at 8,000 ft.
