DESCRIPTION:
Grand Canyon’s Campground Hosts ensure that park visitors have as safe and enjoyable a visit as possible, and in the process, have an enjoyable time themselves!
COVID-19 vaccination requirements
The Department of the Interior’s COVID mitigation policy bulletin regarding access to federally controlled buildings for business visitors has been determined by DOI to apply to volunteers. Therefore, volunteers who access NPS-controlled buildings and vehicles must fill out the Certification of Vaccination form and carry it with them while volunteering. If necessary, volunteers must complete testing requirement.
Major Duties
· Maintain own campsite in accordance with all park regulations and set a good example for other campers.
· Show up for scheduled hours and days. Work schedule will be discussed with supervisor upon hiring.
· Greet and register campers as they enter the campground, keep accurate records, interpret campground regulations and directions, and assist the camper as best as possible.
· Perform minor maintenance in the campground and kiosk. Maintain a neat, tidy, and organized work area.
· Report any hazards in or out of the campground to an immediate supervisor.
· Periodically make rounds in the campground in order to update records and remind campers of rules and regulations. Any law enforcement issues will be reported to park rangers.
· Clean 50-80 firepits daily depending which campground assigned to and collect litter.
· Occasionally assisting visitors one to two hours after sunset.
· Assist with general restroom maintenance.
· Drive a government vehicle e.g., truck or golf cart.
Knowledge and Skills Required
· Be happy, healthy, and willing to give 100%.
· Be in good physical health, enjoy meeting and talking with people, be friendly and helpful to all park visitors.
· Can deal effectively with stressful situations.
· Be a team player.
· Have a professional and courteous demeanor.
· A background check maybe required, this involves fingerprinting and a documented work/residential history.
Safety Considerations
· Driving personal or government vehicle.
· Driving on icy roads.
· Walking on icy surfaces.
Required Training or Certifications
Valid Driver’s License. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Use of Personal Equipment
Per Director’s Order 7 Volunteer-in-Parks 6.4, when the Grand Canyon National Park accepts a volunteer’s offer to use his/her own personal property or equipment for official purposes, and that property is lost, damaged, or destroyed, the VIP may be reimbursed for the loss or a depreciated portion of the loss, subject to the rules and conditions of the agency’s personal property claim program detailed in the Department of the Interior Departmental Manual, 451 DM 3. A statement that the VIP offers to provide and use such equipment as part of his/her official duties must be included on Optional Form 301a. Moreover, the form must specifically identify and describe the personal property being used. This must be discussed verbally with volunteers and included in their service description.
Authority for this reimbursement is Federal Employee Status for Volunteers (16USC 558 (c)), and the Grand Canyon National Park may reimburse up to $2,500.00 total for volunteer supplied equipment required for this assignment accidentally damaged or lost incidental to performing the duties in this job description. The reimbursement limit shall apply, per incident, and even if the claimed loss exceeds that amount. Claims must be filed using US Department of Interior Form DI-570. The list can be a separate document to allow for a better description and this document must be provided to the park, with a copy to the volunteer:
· Serial number
· Description of any damage and repair or replacement estimates
· Ensure functionality
· Photos and/or video of the equipment being used to document any existing damage
Reimbursements
The only reimbursement authorized is for the use of personal property used to perform volunteer duties. Incidental expenses.
Benefits
The volunteer will be provided an RV site with water, sewer, propane & electricity.
Physical Demands
Some duties require shoveling, sitting, standing, bending, or walking for extended periods of time. Able to lift 50 lbs.
Work Environment
· Temperature will range from 84-24 F.
· Snow and rain depending on season.
· Walking over uneven terrain at times.
· Work a minimum of 32 hours per week. Days off may vary and need to work holiday weekends.
· May be exposed to irritants such as vehicle fumes, ash, dust, plants, dead brush, and insect bites.
Duty Station
This position is duty stationed at Desert View. If work is required outside Desert View and requires overnight at a temporary duty station, the volunteer will be put in the National Park Service travel program so the volunteer will receive a per diem and lodging (if needed).
Living Conditions/Location
The volunteer will provide their own living accommodations, the park will pay for water, sewer, electric and propane. Very limited services that include a snack bar, general store, and gas station. There is no Wi-Fi. However, there is a recreational center in the Village that has Wi-Fi and a computer lab, 25 miles from Desert View. There is a market, multiple restaurants, post office, medical clinic, and laundry facilities at the Village. However, the market is limited and expensive. The nearest town that has multiple grocery and retail stores is Flagstaff, AZ which is 90 miles away from the park. Northern Arizona has a unique climate depending on the time of year, it can be snowing or over 100 degrees. Please pack many layers because even if it is hot during the day, temperatures can reach freezing at night. Northern Arizona is also very dry and high altitude, prepare yourself for that type of environment and living at 7,000 ft.
