Share your love of wildlife and the National Wildlife Refuges. Join us as a Campground Host at beautiful Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, a true oasis in the desert. Now accepting applications for May 2022 – September 2022 or March 2023 – September 2023 with flexible start and end dates.
Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is a wetlands oasis on the northern edge of the Mojave Desert. Preserved for thousands of migratory birds, it is an important nesting ground for the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher. Campground hosts play an important role in informing the public of the refuge’s conservation mission and many recreational opportunities. Duties:
- Greet visitors and provide information about the refuge. Restock brochures throughout the refuge.
- Assist in light, daily cleaning of displays, and restrooms. This includes cleaning pit toilets, fire pits, grills, picking up litter, light maintenance, and light grounds keeping.
- Inform visitors of regulations.
- Record visitation.
- Be available to assist with special events and interpretive programs.
- Occasionally fill in at visitor center when other staff are not available.
- Drive a refuge vehicle.
- Wear U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service volunteer’s uniform.
If desired, volunteers may also have the opportunity to assist with other refuge duties such as hosting at the visitor center front desk, removing invasive weeds, and participating in special events.
Requirements: The Campground Host position requires a commitment of 24 hours per volunteer per week. (We are currently seeking hosts for May 2022 – September 2022 and March 2023 – September 2023 with flexible start and end dates).

· Each resident must work a minimum of 24 hours per week each in exchange for RV space and hookup utilities.
· Other duties may be assigned by Site or Direct supervisor.
· Willing to work 24 hours per week, including weekends and holidays
· Desire to talk with and inform the public about rules and regulations
· Must wear USFWS volunteer uniform
· Enthusiasm and willingness to learn

Pahranagat NWR is located in the transition zone of the Mojave and Great Basin deserts at an elevation of approximately 3,200 feet. This position is primarily based in our 15-site campground which sits along Upper Pahranagat Lake. The lake provides non-motorized boating and fishing (with permit) opportunities. Volunteer(s) receive an RV pad with utility hook-ups for electric and sewage. Potable water is also available on the refuge. Propane is provided. Laundry facilities and Wi-Fi are located at the main Refuge headquarters, located about 3 miles away.
