Join the team at Fort Bowie National Historic Site! We are currently seeking motivated volunteers that want to be a part of a great team serving visitors at a beautiful and historic park. Fort Bowie is located within the Chiricahua Mountains. The site has a rich and complex history, and the NPS actively preserves the ruins of the fort as well as other cultural resources within the site.
Fort Bowie is excited to recruit volunteers for our summer season. Visitor Services Volunteers support the interpretive operations at the park by engaging with visitors and helping visitors to connect with the park and its resources. This position will be duty stationed at Fort Bowie NHS but the volunteer will also support operations at Chiricahua NM.
This is a great opportunity for a volunteer that wants to be engaged in program development and research for the park. Volunteers will spend 50% of their time engaged with visitor services, and the other 50% of their time will be independent project work. Volunteer work will be completed both indoors and outdoors. Training and orientation will be provided. This position may require long periods of standing, as well as walking or hiking. A minimum of 32 hours per week is required; a work week includes 8 hour shifts, 4 days a week.
Volunteers live in the park. RV sites are located near our administrative and maintenance buildings, 850 yards from the visitor center. RV spaces can accommodate trailers or motorhomes up to 32 feet. Full hook-ups are available (electricity, water, and sewage). Cell coverage and laundry services are available in the park.
Volunteers will be required to operate a government vehicle. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Volunteers are required to wear a uniform.

Beginning in January 2022, all volunteers accessing NPS buildings must:
Complete and present a Certification of Vaccination form (OMB Control No. 3206-0277). If they have NOT attested to being fully vaccinated, they must also possess and present a negative COVID-19 test result from within the 3 days immediately prior to the date of entry; and
Maintain completed form (and test result, if necessary) on their person for the duration of their visit and present it to the volunteer manager or supervisor, as needed; and
Comply with all public health protocols in place at the park or office.
Volunteers who do not access NPS buildings, such as volunteers working outside only for a one day event, are only required to comply with other public health protocols in place, such as masking, social distancing, and hand washing.

This position is ideal for anyone looking to be part of an energetic team and to be engaged in a variety of operations!
Volunteers will work in the park visitor center, rove the park, greet and welcome visitors, answer questions, and provide orientation about the park and area. In addition, volunteers assist our cooperating association with bookstore sales, operate a cash register, and answer phone calls. Volunteers may assist with park special events.
Additionally, project work will be assigned. Project work could include research, content development for social media and park websites, and office and clerical support. There may also be an opportunity to get involved in historic preservation projects.
All work will be completed in accordance with park safety protocols to ensure a safe work environment for staff, and to ensure a safe visitor experience for the public.

Fort Bowie is uniquely designed as a hike-in site. Situated within the Chiricahua Mountains, the fort and visitor center is accessed via a 3 mile round trip hike. We like to tell people that getting to Fort Bowie is half the adventure!
Fort Bowie NHS is in a remote area of Southeastern Arizona. Limited services are available in Bowie AZ, located 13 miles north of the park. The nearest grocery store, medical care, and other services are located in Willcox AZ, 35 miles to the west. More services and amenities are available in Tucson AZ, approximately 120 miles to the west. Volunteers will need a reliable mode of transportation while working at the park.
Chiricahua NM is approximately 25 miles from Fort Bowie. Volunteers will use a government vehicle when traveling to the park for volunteer duties.
Local points of interest include Coronado National Memorial, Tombstone, and Bisbee.
