Job Description

We are recruiting for the summer of 2022. A pair or couple is preferred for this position due to the number of hours needed. The purpose of the trailhead steward program is to have volunteers present at the trailhead to encourage safety practices and promote wilderness concepts to the visitors recreating in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness area. This helps to preserve the area and prevent emergencies by making these contacts at the trailhead. The volunteer will provide information to the visiting public about the area and policies.

Trailhead stewards greet visitors and encourage safety practices, promote wilderness concepts, and inspire Leave No Trace ethics. Being at the trailhead, volunteers will also provide aid if needed for emergency response situations.

This is a seasonal volunteer position that will run from June through September. This is the minimum commitment. One or two months can be added to either or both ends based on the availability of the volunteers. This is a position for a volunteer couple or pair that will work together to ensure that the trailhead is covered from 0600 1400 daily.A covered RV/trailer pad with hookups is provided along with laundry facilities. Tent camping is not recommended due to the extreme desert environment. Winds can exceed 50 mph.

Orientation will include attending a walk-in lottery, a field orientation that will include a hike into Wire Pass to the confluence with the Buckskin and a hike out to the Wave. These hikes will assist with knowledge of the routes and conditions that may be needed when communicating with visitors. Volunteers will be required to provide their own transportation from the contact station to the trailhead, about 15 miles.
