DESCRIPTION:
This is a full time 40-hours per week volunteer position. The incumbent must furnish his or her own trailer or RV under 40’ in length and live in the assigned campground.
Red Ives is nestled approximately 46 miles up the St. Joe River from Avery, Idaho to the West and approximately 45 miles from the town of St. Regis, Montana to the East. Nearest amenities will be in St. Maries, Idaho or Kellogg, Idaho for groceries and services. Superior, Montana to the East will also have amenities for groceries and services. Each are located approximately 2 to 3 hours drive time away. Red Ives is the site of the St. Joe Ranger District’s popular Red Ives Ranger Cabin rental and is nestled in the heart of a designated Wild and Scenic River Corridor. The St. Joe River is also a “Blue Ribbon” trout fishing stream for fly fisherman and abundant wildlife can be seen daily in the Ranger Station grounds. Although the Red Ives Ranger Station served from the 1930’s and closed its doors in 1984, it now serves as an interpretive center and popular point of interest to recreationalists of all sorts.
Host hours of operation would be Thursdays through Mondays between the hours of 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1p.m to 4 p.m. Host duties will be to greet guests to the Red Ives Ranger Cabin rental, maintain the lawns and landscaping on the grounds, assist in maintaining facilities on site, and provide information and brochures. In addition, host may be tasked to check on district stock (mules and horses). This would include getting visual confirmation of the animals and feeding one or two bales of hay. Host may also be tasked with keeping track of recreational use at three of the district campgrounds in the immediate area.
Must have good customer service, ability to maintain a set schedule and turn in recreation use reports, able to work 40 hours per week (includingweekends and holidays), and must wear designated uniform such as a agency shirt and/or hat.

Some work may be performed in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, or uneven surfaces. The position may require some physical exertion such as standing for long periods, lifting 25 to 50 pounds, stretching and reaching. Camp host position requires walking, bending, shoveling, raking and working outdoors in all types of weather. We also are taking the necessary precautions and recommendations by the CDC to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
