DESCRIPTION:
Denali National Park and Preserve is looking for volunteers who love interacting with visitors and are passionate about wildlife and education. Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all kinds of summer weather in Alaska is essential.
The Savage River Area is a hotspot for human-wildlife interactions in Denali National Park and Preserve. We’re looking for a couple of volunteers who can work independently and interact with visitors in a busy place, deliver often times complex information and perform a variety of duties from informal interpretation to traffic/parking control.
Housing (RV site with full hook-ups) and some funds for reimbursement of expenses are available.
Duties
- Provide park visitors information about the park’s trail, shuttle bus and road systems, natural history, and recreational opportunities.
- Protect park resources by helping visitors understand park regulations and safety information.
- Assist park staff by staffing the Savage River Parking Area, as well as roving the popular trails within one mile of the respective trailheads.
- Report emergencies, missing persons or other law enforcement concerns to park staff.
- Help with traffic control, litter pick-up, minor maintenance tasks, and other duties as needed.
- Assist with visitor concerns and emergencies where possible.
Time Commitment:
- Four days per week,, 30-32 hours per week. Work hours and schedules are TBD.
- The tour of duty for this position is mid-May through mid-September, however, there is some flexibility due to weather and travel through Canada and Alaska.
Skills, Experience and Other Factors:
- Ability to work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
- Familiarity with park regulations, emergency procedures, safety information, roads and trails, and natural history.
- Ability to learn proper use of park radios.
- First aid and CPR/AED Certification desired, but not required.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
- Savage River volunteers spend a great deal of their work day outdoors. They must be prepared to work in a variety of weather conditions.
