DESCRIPTION:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) operates the 5-Mile Campground, Yukon River Crossing Visitor Contact Station and Arctic Circle Contact area.

 

DESCRIPTION
The 5-Mile Campground and Yukon River Crossing Contact Station is located 140 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska (nearest city) where the Dalton Highway crosses the Yukon River. Here, the half-mile wide Yukon flows through a scenic canyon, surround by the rolling hills blanked with birch and spruce trees. Moose, bears, and occasionally wolves, roam through the area. The Yukon River Crossing is not a town – facilities include a boat ramp, a small hotel and restaurant, gas station, and tire repair service. Facilities in the 5-Mile Campground area includes, an airstrip, a small cafe and hotel (when open), an artesian well, RV dump station, Alaska DOT station and BLM administration site. BLM does not take reservations at this site, so all sites are first come first serve.

The work schedule is 5 days on and two days off. Host receives a non-taxable reimbursement for each day worked at $42.00 per day.

No cell phone coverage. Host will be provided with a Sat phone to make daily safety and data calls.

The Arctic Circle Visitor Contact area is 60 miles north of the Yukon River.

Coldfoot Camp is 120 miles north of the Yukon River.

 

 

DUTIES
Provide information on the Dalton Highway destinations such as the Arctic Circle, Coldfoot, Wiseman, Atigun Pass, and Deadhorse.

Provide information on road conditions and hazards, camping, fishing, and other recreational opportunities, as well as regulations regarding these uses.

Answering basic questions about the natural resources, history and culture of the region.

Maintaining a positive BLM presence and comfortable atmosphere for visitors and local residents.

Selling a small selection of books and other items, balancing daily receipts, and assisting with inventory for the Alaska Geographic Association, BLM non-profit partner.

Conduct routine cleaning and maintenance of contact station and government facilities.

Assist with special projects.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS
The Bureau of Land Management depends on volunteer hosting 5-Mile Campground/contact station and requires strong volunteer commitment. This is not a “helper” position. Volunteers must be willing to assume primary responsibility for staffing the campground and be available to assist at the contact station two days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Volunteer Commitment: All summer or from May 15 – July 15.

Host required to have their own trailer or RV. BLM provides gas for generators, propane for cooking and heat.

We are looking for a volunteer who:

  • Enjoy meeting and interacting with all types of people
  • Can work independently as well as cooperatively with others
  • Have knowledge of, and/or experience in, Alaska’s Interior and Brooks Range
  • Have knowledge of Alaska’s natural resource agencies and their missions
  • Ability to conduct sales

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Yukon River Crossing is not a town, Fairbanks is the closest city located 3-hour drive to the south.

The weather is variable, with summer temperatures ranging from the teens to the eighties. In this part of Alaska, warm days in June and early July often bring afternoon thunderstorms.

In 2017, nearly 11,000 people visited the contact station.
