The Yellowstone Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest in Livingston, Montana is offering an opportunity to volunteer in an exciting and challenging position. If you enjoy far views, blue-ribbon fishing streams, wildlife sightings, blue skies, great hiking trails and a purpose to your day, check out this adventure for a summer. The Boulder River Valley and its tributaries are in a stunning part of southwest Montana at the edge of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. There are nine developed campgrounds, 5 of which are fee campgrounds, 2 picnic areas and 1 Interpretive Trail. One campground and one picnic area are located in the Crazy Mountains 23 miles north of Big Timber, MT. As our roving volunteer, you would be expected to maintain the recreation sites and dispersed camping opportunities while providing quality information to forest visitors. Hosts will provide excellent public service by welcoming recreationists and advising visitors about Forest Service rules and regulations and alert law enforcement personnel about emergencies, unsafe conditions or infractions but will not perform law enforcement activities. Other duties will be to educate campers and visitors about the Forest Food Storage Order and bear awareness, record and monitor bear sightings and incidents and forward reports to supervisor. Water tests, regular toilet cleaning, litter pickup, fire ring cleaning and general maintenance of campgrounds and recreation sites will be required. Monitoring visitor fee compliance will be assigned after training. Ensuring that campers pay their fees is one of the host’s primary duties. Fees collected at the sites pay for the utilities, water tests, toilet pumping and law enforcement patrols. Fees also help pay for site upgrades and general maintenance supplies and basic needs such as toilet paper! Volunteer campground hosts are front-line representatives for the US Forest Service. Few Forest Service employees have as much direct daily contact with the members of the public as a campground host. Your volunteer service is greatly appreciated and is critical to achieving our Agency’s mission of protecting the land and serving the people. You will be an esteemed member of our team and will be supported in every way possible. Hosts will be provided with a Forest Service vehicle, all the necessary tools to complete their daily activities, all supplies needed, and will attend required trainings before beginning the season’s duties. Ensuring clean and well-maintained campgrounds and recreation sites are of the utmost importance. The Forest Service provides an RV pad at the Historic Main Boulder Ranger Station (large enough to accommodate a 34′ trailer), in a private, scenic location, with sewer connection, water, propane and electricity. Wi-Fi is also available at no charge; a landline phone for local calls is available. Cell phone service is spotty, so a booster is provided. A Forest Service radio is located in the station and in the vehicle. Other personnel housing is on site, and a local volunteer docent staffs the nearby Visitor Center on weekends from early July through Labor Day. A full season’s commitment is required. Average physical abilities are necessary as walking on uneven ground, lifting, mowing, sawing, tool use (both power and hand), and driving, among other maintenance duties, are required. Hosts must have a current driver’s license. Hosts will be asked to patrol 4 days a week with 3 mid-week days off and are not required to be on site during those off days. A varied shift may be required to cover highest visitor contact. The nearest town is about 30 miles north of the Main Boulder Ranger Station. Big Timber has a population of about 1650 and offers a grocery store, Post Office, public library, numerous restaurants, lumber yard, hardware stores, Sheriff offices and many other businesses. Our District offices are located in Livingston, MT which is about 30 miles from the Main Boulder Ranger Station to the west. Livingston has a population of approximately 7500, with many amenities available. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, sightseeing, bird and wildlife watching… the list goes on and on for off-duty experiences. This is a spectacular area and attracts many visitors.
