DEPT: Forest Service
DATES:
DESCRIPTION:
This role serves the Tallac Historic Site, a unique property that preserves
turn-of-the-century Lake Tahoe in time, giving modern-day recreationists the chance to
experience 1920s culture. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in
1987 and consists of more than 20 pine lumber structures. Volunteers are important
caretakers of Tallac Historic Site (THS), offering services such as land management, tour
operations, museum retail services, and structural repairs and maintenance. During
special events, volunteers don period-appropriate attire and play a role in living history
experiences. Work responsibilities are varied, with each volunteer capable and expected to
perform more than one designated task; though, duties are matched to the volunteer’s
skillset.
This volunteer program is operated through a partnership with the site’s interpretative
association, the Great Basin Institute. For the duration of service, volunteers receive RV
hook-ups with laundry facility access at no cost. In 2022, THS is expected to be open
Thursday through Sunday, so priority will be given to those with weekend availability. In
addition, volunteers typically work between 28-32 hours/week. Session dates are as follows:
Session 1: May 9 – June 27
Session II: June 27 – August 22
Session III: September 22 — October 17
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Tallac Historic Site is a lakefront property,
located roughly 15 minutes from South Lake Tahoe. The surrounding area is chalk-full of
diverse recreation opportunities, such as Desolation Wilderness backcountry hiking and
city attractions such as Reno, NV and Sacramento, CA. Yosemite National Park is less than
a 3-hour drive away.
