DESCRIPTION:

The Divide Ranger District on the Rio Grande National Forest is seeking a volunteer(s) to help throughout the summer with recreation related projects. The position is based out Creede, Del Norte or South Fork.

Be part of providing Forest visitors exceptional experiences and memories! Whether camping, picnicking, boating, hiking, fishing, riding an OHV or any of the other many uses of public lands recreationists expect varied, clean, and well-maintained recreation opportunities. This will be the focus of this opportunity – travel to the various campgrounds and recreation sites and ensure in safe condition, clean the area (including restrooms); paint/stain picnic tables, signs, restrooms; prune vegetation around fire rings and sites; some mowing; and other various projects. These volunteers also provide the face of the Forest Service to the public answering questions and providing information. You’ll be doing this in the eastern San Juan Mountain near the headwaters of the mighty Rio Grande. Other opportunities to periodically assist other disciplines in addition to recreation may be available. Expectation is a minimum of 3 workdays/week.

 

DUTIES

Project is primarily field going and as such work can occur in a wide range of conditions including heat, rain, cold and at elevation (8,000’ +). Work typically includes trimming and pruning around sites, painting/staining tables, signs, and restrooms, cleaning fire-rings, sign installation and maintenance, basic carpentry, and cleaning restrooms. Project is located in south central Colorado on the Divide Ranger District of the Rio Grande National Forest. Work occurs throughout the District with emphasis up-river from Creede.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Greater than or equal to 18 yo. Must be able to work in inclement weather, uneven terrain, and intermittently be able to lift 50 pounds. “Handyman” type skills beneficial to include use of basic hand and power tools and carpentry. Valid driving license with no restrictions requiring breathalyzer modification to government vehicle.

For work: boots with ankle support and Vibram type soles, pants, long sleeve shirts required of volunteer. FS will provide required personal protective equipment such as leather work gloves, hardhats, face masks/shields, and other items that are identified as required PPE for the tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This opportunity is in south-central Colorado on the Divide Ranger District of the Rio Grande National Forest. The Forest surrounds the San Luis Valley, surrounded by the San Juan, La Garita, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Workday starts at the bunkhouse/trailer pad sites known as East Bench Ad Site, located 2 mi south of Creede, CO. The workday includes travel and work at various recreation sites around Creede and the upper Rio Grande basin.
