DESCRIPTION:
Be a rare bird, a summer volunteer at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. While most volunteers have flown north with the snow birds, the Refuge is still in need of help in our visitor services program. Come spend the summer at the beach and witness nesting sea turtles, glowing lagoon waters and spectacular rocket launches.
Summer is the slow season at Merritt Island NWR. The hot, humid weather sends most visitors directly to our neighbors the Canaveral National Seashore for a dip in the Atlantic. Fishing and kayaking remain popular however. Volunteers are in short supply with all of the snow birds having flown north. As part of a small but valued team, you will assist with all aspects of visitor services including staffing the visitor center desk and collecting fees or mowing lawns and emptying trash. Educational programming and tours are fewer this time of year and much behind the scenes work is done to prepare for busier days in the fall.
Volunteers will assist with a wide variety of basic maintenance tasks such as trail trimming, trash collection, painting and light carpentry. They will also assist with welcoming and orienting visitors, collecting fees, project planning and potentially events.
Volunteer should be able to work independently following training and instruction. Duties will be about 50% routine and 50% dynamic. Flexibility is an important quality. Basic light carpentry and repair skills, typical to most homeowners is desired. Good judgement and common sense are needed for independent work. The ability to see what needs to be done and bring the need to the attention of the supervisor is essential. A desire to meet new people and learn new things is appreciated.
