Lying a few miles off the south Texas coast, Padre Island National Seashore protects the world’s longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. The national seashore embraces 66 miles of beach, windswept dunes, endless grasslands, tidal flats teeming with life and warm nearshore waters. The national seashore’s southerly location is such that camping is available year-round, which means that campground hosts are also needed year-round.
Padre Island National Seashore has two campgrounds. The Malaquite Campground has 48 campsites and sits behind the dunes approximately 100 yards from the Gulf of Mexico. One host site is available here. Full hook-ups are available for RVs.
The Bird Island Basin has 40 campsites and is located directly on the Laguna Madre. One host site is available here. Hook ups and showers are not available, however there is a vault toilet. Hosts in this campground typically have their own solar panels or mini turbines for electricity generation, use the dump/fill station and cold water showers at the Malaquite Campground.
Volunteers work a minimum of 32-hours per week at either site in exchange for an RV site. A one month/4-week minimum commitment is required.
