Cape Lookout National Seashore — Front Desk Visitor Center Volunteer at Park Headquarters
This position is for a front desk volunteer at the park headquarters facility.

Each opening is to fill a one month gap in coverage at our Headquarters Visitor Center Front Desk. Excellent performance may open the door to future volunteer opportunities.
This is an RV POSITION – RV PAD WITH FULL HOOKUPS IS PROVIDED – Unfortunately, there are no other housing options available.
The RV pads are nearly waterfront on the sound, with some having water views. RV area is adjacent to a nature trail.
Cape Lookout National Seashore protects over 50 miles of offshore barrier islands. These islands include pristine beaches that are home to wild horses, sea turtles, dolphins and other amazing wildlife. Rich cultural heritage, including two historic villages and a lighthouse are home to centuries of history. Fishermen and campers drive the beaches in 4×4 vehicles and a ranger-station and two dozen cabins offer a brief respite from the elements. Pristine night-sky conditions have allowed Cape Lookout National Seashore to become an International Dark Sky Park in 2022, the first park to achieve this certification on the Eastern Seaboard. Astronomy events, and other park ranger-led activities offer unforgettable experiences for visitors and volunteers alike.
Volunteering during the Summer at Cape Lookout can be quite busy, with very high visitation and near-constant visitor inquiries for trip-planning and other questions.
In order to qualify for an RV Pad housing area, volunteer must commit to 4 days/week of visitor center coverage. Volunteer couples may split this coverage from day-to-day, but the total of four days of coverage per week is required. The daily work schedule is 8 hours, from 8:45-5:15 with a 30 minute lunch break.
Harkers Island has multiple smaller grocery and convenience stores within 10 minutes. Other larger stores, medical services, etc. are available in either Beaufort or Morehead City (Roughly 30-40 minutes away)
DUTIES
Typical duties include: answering phones, responding to voicemails, mailing out letters, general office assistance, etc.
Volunteers also conduct informal interpretation about park resources and should be comfortable speaking with diverse members of the public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is primarily inside a climate-controlled building located at the park headquarters facility on Harkers Island, NC.
The outdoor climate during these months is hot and humid. Biting insects such as black flies, greenhead flies, biting midges (no see-ums), mosquitos, and ticks are all common at Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Volunteer uniforms, including a sweatshirt and windbreaker, are provided.
