Campground Description:
The Huron-Manistee National Forests is looking for an energetic, hardworking, fun-loving person/couple to serve as volunteer hosts. For 2024, there are opportunities at both Jewell Lake Campground and Sawmill Point Campground on the Huron Shores Ranger District near the town of Oscoda, Michigan.
Round Lake Campground
Round Lake Campground is a scenic, wooded camping area offering a wide variety of recreation opportunities. Anglers can find sunfish, bass and pike while campers can relax at the beach or have a picnic. The campground is located in the village of Sand Lake. Groceries and gas are nearby. Round Lake has 33 campsites with fire rings, picnic tables and lantern posts. There are six vault toilets, two water pumps, gravel interior roads and a boat launch. Round Lake also has a beach area and picnic area. Garbage service is available at the campground.
Rollways Campground
Rollways Campground is a small, secluded campground located along the beautiful Au Sable River. The campground offers pull-through style camping sites and is an excellent camping area for the nature lover. Access to the river from the campground is very steep and difficult. There are 19 campsites. Each campsite has a fire ring, grill, picnic table and lantern post. The campground has paved pull through spurs and a paved interior road. Drinking water and garbage service is available. The vault toilets have accessible paths.
Monument Campground
Monument Campground is a fully accessible camping area with a red pine plantation. The campground was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. IT is located next to Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center. The campground offers a secluded natural camping experience with many opportunities to view wildlife. There are 17 single campsites and two double sites. Each campsite has a fire ring, grill, picnic table, and lantern post. The campground has paved back-in spurs and a paved interior road. Drinking water and garbage service is available. The vault toilets have accessible paths.
Jewell Lake Campground
- Jewell Lake Campground is located on the east side of the 193-acre Jewell Lake. This lake offers a wide variety of fishing and boating opportunities.
- No reservations required
- Boat ramp/day use area
- 2 handpumps for drinking water

- No electricity/no hookups/no septic for RV
- 32 campsites including host site.

Sawmill Point- Cook
Directions– Located 15 miles west of Oscoda on River Road. Turn north on Cooke Dam Rd.

- Sites 42-57
- Reservations are required through Recreation.gov
- Boat Ramp @ site
- 4 pit vault toilets
- Heavy camper use
Position Description:
Campground Hosts represent the Forest Service to visitors by explaining rules and regulations, answering questions, and providing information. Hosts will be asked to provide friendly and patient customer service, perform daily campground cleaning, and some other light maintenance as needed.
All necessary tools, supplies, safety equipment, uniform components, and training will be provided by the Forest Service. Additionally, a golf cart and fuel will be available for transportation around the campground. Previous host experience is helpful but not required.

Duties Include:
– Hosts are expected to wear all personal protective equipment for work and that equipment is provided.
– Hosts are expected to wear a provided host badge at all times (Or other identifying gear).
– Daily check/cleaning of campground sites and restroom facilities
– Daily garbage pick-up
– Site mowing (if gear is provided) coordinated with Rec Staff
– Other minor miscellaneous site maintenance (as needed)
– Completion of a daily visitor log
– Checking vehicles/campers for proof of fee payment
– Leaving notice of failure to pay for vehicles not displaying proof of payment (or contact MRD Rec Staff)
– Daily interaction with visitors including answering questions about the site and the Mio Ranger District
– Review and adhere to all applicable safety requirements set forth for duties performed (JHAs)
– Regular check in with assigned Forest Service point of contact

Position Specific Information:
1) Season:
Earliest start date: May 15th, 2025
End date: September 30th, 2025
A minimum of a 4-weeks commitment within this timeframe is ideal; preference will be given to longer-term applicants.
2) Hours:
Hosts are expected to log a minimum of 20 work hours per week (Memorial Day weekend – Labor Day weekend). Hosts should be in the campground and available to the public 5 days out of each week, plus holidays, per their volunteer agreement. Days typically needing coverage are: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
3) Housing:
Volunteer hosts must have/own their own accommodation (RV/Camper/Motorhome) to live on site; tents are not permitted. No hook ups are available. Handpump well water, vault toilets, and weekly trash pickup are available.
