Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge — Resident Volunteer Program:
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge hosts Resident Volunteers year-round at our RV site located on the refuge in East Lake, NC, approximately 15 miles from our visitor center and headquarters in Manteo, NC. Each RV site includes 30/50-amp electrical service, water and sewer hook-ups, and access to a laundry and bath house with showers. Cell coverage is generally strong depending on carrier, but there is no on-site internet service—most volunteers use personal hotspots.
This position is primarily focused on assisting at the visitor center, though light maintenance and program support may also be needed. Both Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges offer diverse volunteer opportunities suitable for individuals of all ages and abilities. In addition to visitor center staffing, Resident Volunteers may:
Provide general maintenance
Assist with interpretation, education, and outreach
Support biological studies such as seasonal turtle watch
Assist at the Pea Island and “Gateway” Visitor Centers and gift shops, typically open seven days a week
Assist in cleaning the visitor centers and bathrooms

In exchange for service, Resident Volunteers receive RV site amenities including water, electric, and sewer hookups, laundry facilities, and the chance to live in a beautiful, safe natural environment.
Service Requirements
Couples: 24 hours of service per week (each)
Single volunteers: 32 hours of service per week
A minimum commitment of three months is preferred; shorter terms may be negotiated. Longer stays are welcomed when available and when program needs allow
