Site Description:

The Bessey Ranger District Recreation Complex & Campgrounds, located near Halsey, Nebraska, is tucked away within the Nebraska Sandhills. The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands are some of the last publicly accessible intact prairies of the Great Plains. Additionally, this is ecologically where East meets West resulting in a diversity of landscapes, activities, and species. Prairie chicken, sharp-tailed grouse, mule-deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn, prairie dogs, turkeys, coyotes, bobwhite quail, and birds of prey all find habitat in the surrounding ecosystems.  Popular recreation in the area includes OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) riding, hiking, and recreational river use such as tubing and canoeing. Visitors can enjoy the river access to the Middle Loup River and a pedestrian observation bridge that leads to an accessible and stocked fishing pond.

Bessey Recreation Complex has over 40 camp sites able to accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, including one group site and several tent-only sites. The campground is equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, seasonal flush toilets and drinking water spigots. Electric hookups are also available at the group site and several of the standard sites. The complex offers several picnic tables and a group picnic shelter for day-use. Please refer to our campground map to see our campground sites layout.
