JOB DESCRIPTION:

Be a site host at the BLM’s Tyrrell Seed Orchard near Eugene, Oregon, to make a difference for forests in the Pacific Northwest!

The Tyrrell Seed Orchard produces seedlings used by the Federal government and private agencies to replant areas following timber harvest and environmental disturbances like wildfires.

This opportunity is open to an individual or couple with a service-to-others attitude who is friendly and patient. Site hosts help maintain a presence at the orchard during the week, including weekends, after-business hours, and on holidays. Hosts will assist with projects around the orchard and general maintenance.

 

Camp rate reimbursement of $20/day via direct deposit is offered for scheduled volunteer days. RV site provided.

 

Volunteer Requirements

· Must be a U.S. Citizen and possess a valid state driver’s license. Must pass a Department of Interior background check.

· Volunteer must provide own camper or RV. Hosts are offered a gravel pad under an RV-carport for parking with full hookups. Size: ~38’L x ~15’W x ~13.5’H.

· Host must be flexible due to variable weather and changing project needs.

· Be able to work outdoors standing for long periods of time in variable weather conditions. Physically able and willing to work in rough terrain/slopes/uneven ground.

· Complete BLM trainings, such as online defensive driving course.

· Pets are only permitted if approved by BLM Supervisor PRIOR to accepting the position. Pets must be leashed at all times and host must clean up pet waste.

 

Campground Host Duties

· Be available at least 3 days during the week for 6 hours/day to assist with projects. Volunteers must also be available after-hours, weekends, and holidays. Schedule will be determined with BLM staff.

· Conduct patrols of the facilities and orchards using BLM vehicle and report any issues to BLM staff.

· Assist in tree orchards by picking up downed limbs and piling for removal, pruning trees, cutting brush, helping with tree inventories and other projects.

· Answer after-hour calls to the facility, monitor potable water system, help with janitorial duties and lawn/landscaping maintenance.

· Be an ambassador for the BLM volunteer program.
