JOB DESCRIPTION:

The volunteer campground host position is with the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, on the Francis Marion National Forest, in McClellanville, South Carolina at the Buck Hall recreation area. The purpose of the volunteer campground host position is to provide a presence and assistance at Buck Hall campground and day use areas and to protect the facilities and natural resources within designated areas. As the host you are the face of the Forest Service and amazing customer service goes a long way. Volunteers work under the supervision of the District Recreation Program Manager and recreation staff. Weekend and holiday presence is mandatory unless agreed upon by Forest Service personnel.

 

Knowledge Required by the Position:

 

* Knowledge of specific campground and Day Use rules and regulations governing the use of the resource (ie, fees, length of stay, alcohol prohibitions). This should also include general forest and community information.

*Host must work well with people, be personable, neat in appearance, and behave in a manner appropriate to the workplace.

*Awareness level with regards to “Watch Out” situations where assistance is required.

*Basic communications skills.

 

Major Duties:

*Volunteer 30 hours per week; Tuesday/Wednesdays are scheduled off days but please let recreation staff know if schedule needs to be changed especially on weekends and heavy use holidays/shrimp baiting season. Hours of work should be between 7:00 am-11:00 am and 3:00 pm-7:00 pm, five days per week.

*Volunteer must wear identifying Forest Service uniform when on duty which consists of mesh baseball cap, vest or Volunteer T-Shirt.

*Host will learn and use recreation.gov to track campsites that are booked/available

*Hosts DO NOT collect fees from campers or visitors.

*Understand and follow specific rules related to campground use and occupancy as well as associated trail and day use activities. Provide first hand customer service in developed recreation setting. Serve as Forest Service presence to oversee and monitor recreation/campground/camper conditions.

*Host is responsible for reporting needs within the developed recreation area/campground and adjacent facilities to recreation tech/recreation staff.

*Host is knowledgeable on recreation opportunities throughout the Ranger District.

*Provides information to guests and serves as “Goodwill Host” to visitors of the national forest.

*Maintains a wholesome, respectable and impartial presence to the public throughout the tenure as hosts. Host serves as a representative of the U.S. Forest Service. The Forest Service expects all its representatives to adhere to civic-minded principles in their personal conduct and to exhibit a high degree of personal integrity. Acceptable conduct involves sincere respect for the rights and feelings of others and the assurance their personal conduct will not harm or be considered discriminatory to other volunteers, employees, or the Forest Service or cause an unfavorable reaction from the public.

*Occasional mowing with riding lawn tractor and use of trimmer/blower is needed to assist FS staff in upkeep of campground during growing season (March-November).

* Host will mow campground area between camper checkout/check-in during grass growing season.
