ADDRESS: 430 South Main Street, PO Box 248 Fredonia, Arizona, 86022
DATES: 5/10/2026 – 10/17/2026
DEPT: Forest Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The mission of the Volunteer program is to inspire and engage volunteers to conserve our nation’s natural and cultural features, serve the current and future visiting public, and ensure the public lands legacy. Join the North Kaibab Ranger District Recreation Team to volunteer and live on beautiful Kaibab National Forest!
We are seeking volunteers (singles or couples) to join the Recreation program on the Kaibab National Forest at the Big Springs Cabin Site, located 22 miles down a dirt road (almost 1 hour) outside of town with no businesses; or Jacob Lake, AZ (located at 8,000 ft elevation, 45 minutes outside of town on a mostly paved road with 1 restaurant, gift shop, and gas station nearby). Volunteers will assist North Kaibab Ranger District Forest Service (FS) personnel with: sanitation/janitorial, general clean-up and maintenance of recreation facilities; and providing public area information, regulations and education to Forest visitors. Volunteers will: maintain a good host concept; provide high-quality public service; and present themselves as clean, professional, and available to help and with a pleasant attitude with visitors. Volunteers shall wear a provided nametag and Forest Service Volunteer logo uniform item to identify themselves as hosts while on duty (vest, patch and/or hat). Volunteers may be able to use a government provided vehicle to perform assigned tasks, or be reimbursed for personal vehicle use while on duty. Volunteers should have backcountry driving experience on uneven, wet, or rocky dirt roads. Training and equipment necessary to complete these tasks will be provided by the Forest Service. Due to high elevation, volunteer must be physically fit because life at 8,000 ft has less oxygen. A commitment of 3 to 6 months of volunteer service is preferred. Volunteers will each be provided $25 for each day of service, typically 6-8 hours, up to 4 days per week.
Examples of duties include but are not limited to: cleaning Big Springs Cabin Site; cleaning the cabins (6-7 total) and site after 11 am check out and before check-in at 2 pm. Cleaning the site amenities include a shared kitchen, dining area and living room, men’s and women’s restrooms (2 showers, 2 toilets each), and an outdoor area with fire pit. If living at Big Springs, volunteer will be Big Springs Host-on-duty during assigned days to assist guests if needed. Additional janitorial, lawn care (riding mower), and minor maintenance duties will be required as needed. Maintenance projects can be completed if you have experience (scraping and painting, residing, and epoxy coating on cement are a few of the projects for 2026).
In addition to Big Springs cabin duties, trailhead vault toilet upkeep may be needed around the Forest including minor janitorial and restock of supplies; and staffing the visitor center at Jacob Lake providing geographic information and educational content and product sales.
Options for lodging include:
A. A furnished cabin located on the Big Springs cabin site. Shared access to a furnished kitchen, restroom/shower house, shared internet and laundry (staff use only) will be available. There is no cell phone service at Big Springs and at many locations on the Forest. Pets are not allowed. WiFi is minimally available—it typically does not reach to the trailer pad. We recommend providing your own WiFi. https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/121740
B. A full-hookup RV site at Big Springs cabin. There is no cell service and WiFi is minimally available. We recommend providing your own WiFi.
C. A shared, furnished housing duplex located at Jacob Lake, AZ. Cell service and shared laundry and shared ice machine is available. Pets are not allowed.
D. A full-hookup RV site at Jacob Lake, AZ. Large RVs welcome! (propane may need to be reimbursed if you don’t have the right connections). Cell service and shared laundry and shared ice machine is available.
Enjoy the Kaibab Plateau, two wilderness areas, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Arizona Strip, and various parks in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. This position does *Not* provide access to closed areas of Grand Canyon National Park.
This opportunity will be open until filled. For priority consideration, please apply as soon as possible and answer as many of the following questions in your application. You may need to answer these questions in an unrelated box on the application form, such as the Other Skills or Previous Experience boxes.
Are you applying as 1 person or more than 1 person?
We have a hookup site available; do you plan to bring a camper or RV? If not, would you accept lodging options A or C above?
Are you available for the entire season from mid May to mid October, or are you applying for a shorter period? We prefer volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 3 months, or longer if possible.
We are hoping to have a vehicle available to our hosts to potentially assist us in the cleaning of several trailhead vault toilet facilities. If a vehicle is unavailable, are you willing to drive your personal vehicle and keep track of the miles for mileage reimbursement? Vehicle should be high-clearance or 4×4. A “crossover” is acceptable if you are comfortable driving it on uneven roads.
Do you have any special accommodation requests?
Would you be coming with any pets?
Are there any additional questions you have for us?
