JOB DESCRIPTION:
Background: Visitor Center and Interpretation Volunteers are front-line representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Caesar Creek Lake. Caesar Creek Lake Visitor Center is one of the 15 Class A Regional Visitor Centers in the country and sees 70,000+ visitors each year. The Visitor Center features a large display gallery, theatre, learning center, and indoor public restroom facilities. Volunteers will provide interpretive programming and outreach to visitors on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers missions. Applicants must be able to pass a background check and be willing to wear a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers volunteer uniform (shirt and name tag).
Schedule: 20 hours per week as an individual or 30 hours per week split between a couple. Requested days of the week worked are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Volunteers may serve the entire recreation season April through October. A campsite is provided in a volunteer exclusive area with water, electricity, and sewer hookups.
Specific duties include:
• Staff the front desk by greeting Visitors, answering questions, giving directions, and issuing fossil colling permits. Caesar Creek Lake Emergency Spillway is a world class Ordovician Period fossil site, so many visitors come to collect fossils.
• Run cash register and restock the gift shop on behalf of the Friends of Caesar Creek, our nonprofit partner agency.
• Present interpretive programs to school groups. Program topics include educational hikes, pond studies, and fossil talks. The typical age range of students is preschool – 4th grade. Interested volunteers will be provided with interpretive training.
• Promote water safety at special events, boat ramps, and beaches through water safety games and passing out water safety items.
• Issue America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Passes.
• Monitor and stock informational materials, brochures, and water safety handouts.
• Update bulletin boards in the recreation areas to inform visitors of regulations and spread water safety messages.
• Assist with maintenance of Visitor Center Caterpillar Lab, aquarium, and terrarium.
• Assist with special events and programming (i.e. Ohio State Fair, sporting events, community gatherings etc.).
