JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Maroon Bells Scenic Area is looking to fill two volunteer campground host positions that would help support the daily operations of three campgrounds as well as facilities within the Maroon Bells Scenic Area. The Maroon Bells Scenic Area offers three developed campgrounds (Silver Bar, Silver Bell and Silver Queen). These campgrounds do not have cell phone coverage, electricity, potable drinking water within the campground. However, there is potable drinking water located in the Day Use Area that campers can utilize. The nearest town is Aspen, Colorado, approximately 10 miles away.
- The Silver Bar, Bell and Queen Campgrounds are located just off the Maroon Creek Road and are nestled in a stand of Aspen at an elevation of 8,460 feet. Each campground has one vault toilet and one dumpster available within the campground. At each site there is: one fire ring, bear locker and picnic table. The campgrounds do not have amenities such as sewer, potable water, electricity or cell phone reception. However, there is potable drinking water located in the Day Use Parking Area that campers can utilize. The nearest town is Aspen, Colorado, approximately 10 miles away. The selected host will be responsible for all three campgrounds which span approximately ½ mile from one another from the Maroon Creek corridor. The host site does have sewer, potable water, solar power and propane is provided by the USFS.
· Silver Bar Campground – 4 sites available at this small primitive campground.
· Silver Bell Campground – 14 sites available on the banks of Maroon Creek.
· Silver Queen Campground – 5 campsites available, near Maroon Creek.
Duties: Greet visitors and assist campers with registration and inform them of rules, regulations, and other pertinent information about the area. Ensure fee envelopes are always available, and signs are posted and clear. Host may occasionally collect fees, and will be required to become a certified Collection Officer. This training will be provided at the beginning of the season. Report problems, violations, or hazards to Forest Service staff in a timely manner. Campground host will communicate often with the USFS staff to inform them of campground updates and other pertinent information. Campground host will often communicate with USFS and volunteer staff using a handheld radio. Daily cleaning and maintenance to include cleaning vault toilets, stocking with toilet paper, raking campsites, removing ashes and trash from fire rings, and minor litter pick-up throughout the campground. Other duties include assisting with facility maintenance, solar and water operations. Other additional duties include, early morning parking, staining or painting, cutting back brush, mowing, and assisting Forest Service personnel with larger projects.
Requirements: Host must enjoy meeting and talking with people, be friendly and helpful to all campground visitors, and communicate effectively with Forest Service staff. Host must be in good physical health and able to work and live in a relatively remote location. Host must present a neat, professional appearance and wear volunteer uniform components as provided by the Forest Service which may include a vest, button down shirt, hat, and nametag. The host will also be required to attend the USFS seasonal orientation at the beginning of the season. Host must contribute a minimum of 25 hours of volunteer time per week and be available on site 4-5 days per week including weekends, holidays, and evenings. Work times and days will be discussed in more detail as days of the week and holidays can affect the need for coverage. Hosts will focus primarily on campground duties and facility maintenance throughout the Scenic Area. Hosts with carpentry and facility maintenance experience are preferred. For example, the host may be asked to make small repairs to broken or damaged signs, replace light fixtures and respond to power outages in building within the Scenic Area. The host may occasionally assist with duties associated with the Welcome Station, however they are not assigned to work in the Welcome Station.
Benefits: Necessary tools and equipment, gloves, and cleaning supplies will be provided. On-the-job training and other required training will be provided. CPR and First Aid may be provided by the USFS, but not guaranteed. Selected host may be responsible for receiving this training outside of the USFS.
Housing Description: Hosts must provide their own hard sided RV. Only hard sided RV’s are permitted at this location because of the frequency of black bear within the Scenic Area and surround campgrounds. A paved site is provided at both host sites located within the Overnight parking lot at the Scenic Area. Both sites can accommodate an RV up to 30’. Amenities within the host site include: one fire ring, picnic table, pedestal charcoal grill and a food storage locker. These sites have both standard sewer and potable water. There is not electricity, however there are solar array and connections for direct power for the RV located in both sites. The USFS provides propane throughout the season for the hosts.
USFS host pet policy: Pets are okay. Pets must be leashed when outside and friendly with humans and other animals. Pets cannot be left outside unattended and a disturbance in terms of noise. Pets are prohibited from riding in USFS vehicles, motorized carts and inside of USFS buildings.
