ADDRESS: Hole-in-the-Wall Campground Essex, California, 92332
DATES: 2025-10-01
DEPT: National Park Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
If you enjoy exploring wide open landscapes AND helping others discovery their own “Easter eggs” in the desert, the Mojave National Preserve is for you! As a campground host based in the Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, you’ll help visitors get the most out their trip. Please commit to at least three months during the months of October 2025 through May 2026. During some of these months, you may encounter very warm temperatures, strong winds, and even snow!
Responsibilities and Qualifications:
· Hosts are the “eyes and ears” of campgrounds: provide rangers with updates on campground facilities, visitor use, wildlife sightings, adverse resource impacts, and safety concerns.
· Tactfully advise visitors/campers on regulations that encourage safety, harmonious interactions with other visitors, and wellbeing of ecosystems, but do not take direct action involving law enforcement situations.
· Use tech-savviness to help campers with Recreation.gov online campground reservation/registration system; hosts do not accept or handle recreational fee transactions.
· Assist park staff with campground operations and upkeep, including occasionally helping Facilities staff keep restrooms and vault toilets clean in visitor areas and campground, reinstalling signposts, painting camp tables, and other light maintenance tasks;
· As campground hosts live in designated RV/trailer sites within the Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, you are subject to requests for assistance at all hours of the day.
· Safely drive government vehicles to check on Mid Hills and Black Canyon Group Campgrounds during tour of duty.
· Educate visitors on the Preserve’s ecosystems, their inhabitants, and its cultural heritage so they can help sustain the Preserve’s character.
· Occasionally staff visitor centers: provide orientation to the area and information about the Preserve, conduct park store sales, and respond to inquiries by phone and mail.
· Occasionally rove hiking trails and paved and unpaved roads to assist and educate visitors.
· Assist visitors by connecting them with proper resources when their vehicles have run out of fuel, experience lockouts or mechanical trouble.
· When necessary, assist with parkwide safety incidents, including road closures, stacking sandbags, etc.
· Operate a park radio to communicate with other staff and dispatcher for visitor and staff safety and assistance.
· In the application, included at least three references, two of which must be a work or volunteer supervisor.
· Be willing to undergo a security check.
Host Site:
· Complimentary RV/trailer site at the Hole-in-the-Wall Campground in exchange for 32 hours/week of service (48 hours/week if you are a pair).
· Must use your own RV/trailer (each host site has water & sewage, but no electricity; propane may be reimbursed).
· Free laundry facility ¾ mile away.
