JOB DESCRIPTION:
Bear Lake Campground is situated in the heart of the Flat Top Mountains along the Bear River. The Campground is 11 miles outside of Yampa, CO and is the most popular campground on the Yampa Ranger District. There are 43 sites including three doubles, one triple and two walk in sites. The campground offers vault toilets, potable water, and trash services. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs and include a picnic table, fire ring, tent pad and bear locker. This nice campground has large campsites and most have shade from Spruce, Fir, and Aspen. The host site comes equipped with a bear locker, picnic table, fire ring, tent pad, vault, water and Wi-Fi.
The campground is 9,000 feet in elevation and summer temperatures are fairly cool. Numerous hiking trails are nearby, both in and out of the Flat Tops Wilderness. There are three reservoirs along the main road all easily accessed from Bear Lake Campground. Bear Lake is within walking distance from the campground and features a Day Use Area and fishing pier.
Dates: Memorial Day- Labor Day
Schedule: 5 days a week. Must be willing to work holidays and weekends.
Transportation: Government Vehicle provided for use during work hours.
Housing: Personal RV or Camper (Government does not Provide housing or Campers)
Large campsite with vault and water.
DUTIES
Descriptions of services to be performed by volunteer Campground Hosts:
1. Greet and assist visitors, answer questions, explain campsite rules and regulations. Distribute maps and handout brochures. May assist campers in locating campsites. Must be familiar with local points of interest and location of services that might be requested by campers such as towing, groceries, gas stations, tourist attractions and local events.
2. Perform maintenance work around the campground such as litter pickup, cleaning and stocking restrooms, removing trash from bear lockers, provide information to FS staff on potential problems, and disseminate information to campers.
4. Assist FS staff with bathroom and campsite cleaning along the Bear River corridor at two additional (smaller) campgrounds.
5. Clean campsites by performing minor maintenance tasks such as raking the campsite pad, washing tables, cleaning out fire rings, picking up litter, and reporting any damage to the FS. Each site should be cleaned after every camper leaves and before another camper arrives.
6. Host will not attempt to discipline or apprehend any guests in violation of the rules. Hosts should inform campers of rules and regulations but are not to participate in any high-risk activity. Host must set an example by being a model camper, always practicing good housekeeping in and around their assigned site and by observing all rules and regulations.
7. Host is expected to work most weekends and holidays during their term. Be observant for activities within the campground requiring immediate attention. Notify the FS as these problems arise. Other minor tasks that might be asked of a Campground Host:
· Keep track of occupied or vacant campsites
· Direct campers to vacant sites
· Inform campers of food storage safety tips
8. Communicate to FS staff situations and maintenance items which need immediate attention. Report situations that could affect the health and safety of visitors. The host may maintain other written records as requested by FS staff.
DAILY:
. Spot Check Toilets.
· Restock toilet paper.
· Sweep.
· Pressure wash bathrooms as needed.
. Clean any obvious mess.
. Stock fee envelopes.
. Clean vacated camp sites.
-Talk With Visitors:
· Answer questions.
· Check that campers have their fee envelope posted.
. Distribute maps and brochures as needed.
-Spot Check Campsites:
· Clean recently vacated campsites. This includes fire pits, bear boxes, and micro trash.
· Make sure occupied campsites are clean and in good order.
· Remove old post tickets.
· Bag and dispose of ashes when cool.
· Tighten bolts on picnic tables.
· Remove any stickers or graffiti from tables, signs and restrooms.
QUALIFICATIONS
A friendly positive attitude is essential to be successful in this position. Hosts are often times the face of the forest and can largely enhance the visitor experience. Host’s must have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check. This person must be physically capable to complete job duties. Also, a friendly positive attitude is essential to be successful in this position. Must have an RV, camper trailer, or something similar.
