JOB DESCRIPTION:

Capitol Reef Campground Hosts are hired through the Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program and are a valuable asset to the park’s campground operation. Major duties and requirements of the Campground Host positions are listed below. On occasion, hosts can assist in other areas of the park. Hosts are not required to take on law enforcement issues; however, they do serve as eyes and ears of the campground and aid in reporting any problems or situations to park rangers. Most of all, Campground Hosts ensure that park visitors have a safe and enjoyable visit and, in the process, have an enjoyable time themselves!

 

DURATION:

We hire two spots (couples or individuals) as Volunteer Campground Hosts for the spring season (March 1st – May 31st), two spots (couples or individuals) for the summer season (June 1st – August 31st), and two spots (couples or individuals) for the fall season (September 1st – November 30th). These dates are approximate.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Assist campers with registration. Does not collect money or have fee duties.

• Provide general information to visitors about Capitol Reef, including campground regulations, interpretive

programs, facilities, and services.

• Conduct campground rounds (morning, afternoon, and evening). Report campground status to the Visitor Center.

• Inform campers of regulations if violations occur. Report any safety issues in or out of the campground to your

supervisor or the ranger on duty. Does not perform law enforcement.

• Drive a government vehicle (golf cart).

• Operate a park radio properly and professionally.

• Perform litter control at campsites. Report campground maintenance needs to park staff.

• Assist visitors after hours.

• Assist with other projects outside the campground as directed by supervisor including help with traffic control

and emergency situations.

• No fee collection, custodial duties, or campfire ring cleaning required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Work schedule is 4 days on, 4 days off. Duties are shared with the other host(s) for the season.

• The majority of work is outside. Temperatures will range from 32-105 degrees.

• Strong wind, rain, and possible snow, depending on the season.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Possess own recreational vehicle. Government housing is not provided.

• Possess a valid driver’s license.

• Properly wear a volunteer uniform, including only wearing the uniform while on official duty.

• Have a professional, courteous, and patient demeanor.

• Have the ability to work effectively in stressful situations.

• Low to moderate physical effort is required for this position. Standing for extended periods of time and walking

on asphalt or dirt surfaces at elevations of 5,500 feet is required.

• Have the ability to lift 20 lbs.
